BEAUTY TALKS WITH MISS SUPRANATIONAL JAPAN 2015

Q: Hello Mieko. How have you been doing lately?
Mieko: I’ve been great since the last time I met you! (Laughter)
Q: Let’s roll dice right away because we don’t have much time here. How have you been preparing for the pageant?
Mieko: First of all, I was told that my legs were too thin so I had to work out on that. So I hired a professional trainer to increase my leg muscles. But that’s just the physical goal that I’ve been working really hard to achieve. The ultimate preparation is to be able to endure the mental and emotional stress of competing with more than 80 beautiful women from around the world. That is where my pageant coach and national director comes into the picture. So I have both physical as well as mental preparations being taken care of by experts.
Q: Miss Supranational is relatively unknown here in Japan. Was it hard to get sponsors?
Mieko: Oh, that is actually not true! Last year’s delegate, Waka-chan, did well as our Japanese representative. She is now very popular because she won the monomane contest, while mimicking Hikaru Utada. That gave some boost to the Miss Supranational brand name here in Japan. But basically, after my stint at my previous pageant last year, a lot of people got to know me and have ever since believed in me. When I was given the opportunity to represent Japan at Miss Supranational this year, many people came to offer their assistance, and I am really blessed to have them.
Q: Do you feel any pressure to win the Miss Supranational title?
Mieko: Of course I do feel a little bit of pressure, but I think the pressure will be more intense when I get to Poland.
Q: What is the biggest pressure that you feel about the competition?
Mieko: I am already 27 years old and this is going to be my last international pageant. I don’t want to go to Poland and think of this whole thing as a paid vacation. I really want to win, because a lot of opportunities will be at stake. The Japanese pageant industry is now peaking up, and I feel that being Miss Supranational Japan, I automatically become the face of Miss Supranational in our country. If I don’t do well in the competition, we might miss the chance to get the attention of the public, as well as the business executives who are just waiting for opportunities to sponsor a pageant like this. So the pressure, basically, is to produce the desired result, and that is to win the pageant.
Q: So, why did you choose to compete at Miss Supranational? Why not just quit pageantry, and go on with your career?
Mieko: That’s a good question! My national director explained to me, very thoroughly, the concept of Miss Supranational and I felt that this is the right pageant for me! At this age, finally, I found a pageant that perfectly suits me! (laughter) Last year at Miss Grand International, I had to quit my job because I had to make myself available in the event that I would win the crown. That was a huge risk and sacrifice on my part because in Japan, we really need to work as a social norm. When I did not win, I had to start from scratch, and looked for a job here in Kobe. So now, I have a career working for a reputable clothing company, and I believe that Miss Supranational is a title that does not ask for her reigning queen to quit everything, and fulfill the beauty queen job full time. If I win the title, I can still work here, and at the same time, make myself available to fulfill my duties as the reigning queen.
Q: The Japanese public does not really know that beauty queens can actually have a career and a crown on her head. Is that what you are trying to say?
Mieko: Yes. That is exactly the thing that I want the Japanese public to know. Beauty queens are not what they think we are. We are not unemployed models who have nothing else to do with our lives but to chase a crown. We can have a career and a title. Especially here in Japan, we do not have stories wherein we can use pageants as a way to get out of poverty. That is not how our society works here. We need to have a job, and Miss Supranational is a pageant that supports women to have a career, and a purpose in this world.
Q: If you become the next Miss Supranational, what will you do and why?
Mieko: The biggest advantage that I have is the fact that in Japan right now, the business sector is moving exponentially. The Tokyo Olympics is inspiring a lot of companies to find opportunities to promote their products. The Olympics may be five years from now, but actually, I can say that now is right time to grab the opportunity and make Miss Supranational an established brand name before 2020. If I become Miss Supranational, I am confident that the Japanese media will follow my journey, and in the process, it will gain massive support from Japanese companies globally. I will do everything that I can to give Miss Supranational a whole different level of exposure and media mileage because this pageant is exactly what we need now to give people a better understanding of what beauty queens can do.
Q: Just like what is now happening with Yuri Uchida, the reigning International Queen of Coffee?
Mieko: Exactly! Yuri is my friend, and look at what she has achieved now! The Coffee Queen pageant was basically an unknown pageant before Yuri won, but look at where it has gone now, and where Yuri has been to? She is everywhere, and is proudly wearing her sash and crown. As far as the Colombian coffee industry is concerned, you can easily spot her. Coffee producers and cafe shops want her to promote their products, and right now she is the face of the biggest coffee producer in western Japan. What I am trying to say is, it means a lot for Japanese people to win something before we will actually embrace it. It is just part of our culture and mindset.
Q: What do you think is biggest misconception about beauty queens in Japan?
Mieko: It is true that beauty contestants in Japan are mainly used to promote commercial products and services that are meant to make women look more beautiful, or lose more weight, or things that are mainly superficial. I am not saying that it is a bad thing, but I believe that many pageants in Japan lack social causes. I want to correct the wrong impression that beauty queens are superficial beings who just do as they are told by sponsors. That is what I like the most about Miss Supranational because I have studied the reign of Ms Asha Bhat. She has been doing a great job championing things that are close to her heart, and gets to keep her title and crown without being enslaved by irrational demands of sponsors. This is why Miss Supranational is a great pageant to introduce to our country.
Q: Is there any charity work that you plan to support if ever you win the title?
Mieko: I was told that Miss Supranational does not have a specific advocacy that the queen has to do. If you are the reigning queen, you basically have the choice on what to do with the crown on your head. If I am blessed to get that crown, I will try to reach out to the various JICA offices in countries that I will intend to visit. I have researched on the countries that Ms Asha Bhat has visited and I learned that she was invited several times to crown the Miss Supranational national winners, such as in Myanmar, Thailand, Mauritius and other countries. So it is a matter of personal initiative on my part to contact a Japanese organization that does social and charitable works in those countries that I will hopefully visit, and from there, I can get myself involved in helping them with the time given to me. However, I have to say that I have to strengthen my advocacy, first, here in Japan. Bullying and teenage suicide are at an alarming stage right now, so I want to be a spokesperson for anti-bullying campaigns in Japan.
Q: Finally, your message to your fans…
Mieko: Thank you very much for all the wonderful words that you always post on my Instagram and Facebook account. I am always encouraged by your messages. I am very blessed that there are many people out there who believe in me. Because of you, I promise to do my best in Poland. I will update you about Miss Supranational 2015 and beautiful Poland, so please follow us in our social media account. 竹内美絵子さんとのビューティートーク
Q: 「 こんにちは、最近調子はどうですか？」
竹内さん：「最後にお会いした時からずっと絶好調ですよ（笑）」
Q:「 時間が限られているので、すぐに本題に入りましょう。世界大会の準備はどうですか？」
竹内さん: 「まず、私の足が細すぎるので、ミスコンのコーチにトレーニングをしなければいけないと言われました。私はその問題を解決するために、プロのトレーナーを雇い足の筋肉を増やしました。筋肉を増やすのにかなり労力を費やしましたが、それは単なる肉体的なゴールに過ぎません。 世界中から集まった８０ヶ国以上の美女と大会で戦うために、メンタル・感情的なストレスを我慢することができるようになることが究極的な準備だと思っています。そこで、私のミスコンのコーチそしてナショナルディレクターの力が必要になります。肉体的・メンタル的な準備のどちらも、彼らの情報や経験による的確な意見やアドバイスによって、私は手厚くサポートを受けています」
Q: 「ミス・スプラナショナルは日本国内でまだ知名度が低いですが、スポンサーを探すのは大変でしたか？」
竹内さん: 「実は、そうでもないんです！というのも昨年の代表、わかちゃんが日本代表として活躍した経緯があるので。彼女は今とても人気があります、宇多田ヒカルのモノマネでコンテスト優勝を果たしたからです。そのニュースが、日本国内でミス・スプラナショナルのブランドネームのイメージを向上させました。 そして、私が昨年参加した別の世界大会で、多くの人が私の存在を知り、その後ずっと私のことを信じ続けてくれました。私が今年ミス・スプラナショナル世界大会に日本代表として参加するチャンスを頂いた時、多くの人が援助を申し出てくれました。本当に感謝しています。」
Q: 「ミス・スプラナショナルのタイトルを勝ち取るプレッシャーを感じますか？」
竹内さん: 「もちろん少しはあります、でもそのプレッシャーはポーランドに着いてからもっと大きくなると思います」
Q:「 世界大会について最もプレッシャーを感じることは何ですか？」
竹内さん: 「私は既に２７歳になり、これが私にとって最後の世界大会出場となります。今回ポーランドに行くに当たって、これを絶対に有給休暇として現地へ行くとは考えたくないんです。本当に勝ちたいんです、なぜなら多くの機会を大会のために犠牲にしているからです。日本のミスコン産業は今一番盛り上がっていて、私がミス・スプラナショナル日本代表になり、自動的にそのまま私が日本国内でミス・スプラナショナルの顔となっているように感じます。もし私が世界大会で活躍しなければ、一般の人々や他の大会を含めミスコン産業にスポンサーを考えている企業の注目を集めるチャンスを逃してしまいます。プレッシャーは望んでいる結果を出すことで、それは大会で勝つことです」
Q: 「では、なぜミス・スプラナショナル世界大会への出場を決めたのですか？ミスコンへの参加を辞め、自分のキャリアを磨くこともできますよね？」
竹内さん: 「いい質問ですね！私のナショナルディレクターが、ミス・スプラナショナルのコンセプトを細かく説明してくれ、今の自分にぴったりだと感じたんです！この年齢になって、遂に私に完璧に合うミスコンを見つけました（笑）。昨年 ミス・グランド・インターナショナル世界大会に出場するため、そしてクイーンになった場合、全てのイベントに参加することを考え仕事を辞めなければなりませんでした。それはとても大きな犠牲でした、なぜなら日本国内では社会規範として働く必要が本当にあるからです。そして、私はその大会で残念ながら勝てなかったので、ゼロから神戸で仕事を探しました。そして今、私は有名な衣服の会社で働いています、ミス・スプラナショナルのタイトルは２０１５年のクイーンに全てのことを辞めるように指示をしない、ビューティークイーンにフルタイムの仕事を続けることを可能にすると信じています。もし、私がタイトルを取ったら、今と同じ職場で働き、それは同時に２０１５年のクイーンとしての義務を果たすことにも繋がります」
Q: 「日本ではビューティークイーンが、キャリアとクラウンの両方を同時に保持することができる、ということを知る人がとても少ないように見えますが、このことについてどう思いますか？
竹内さん: 「はい、それはまさに私が一般の方に知ってもらいたいことです。実はビューティークイーンは皆さんが考えているような人々ではないんです。私たちはクラウンを追うだけの、人生に無頓着な雇用されていないモデルではないんです。私たちはキャリアとタイトルの両方を手にすることができます。特に豊かな日本では、まずミスコンが貧困から抜け出すための手段であったという話を聞いたことがありません。こういった世界とは社会の仕組みが違います。私たちには仕事が必要で、ミス・スプラナショナルは自分のキャリアを持ち、この世界に目的を持つ女性を手厚くサポートしているミスコンです」
Q: 「もし、２０１５年ミス・スプラナショナルに竹内さんが輝いたら、何をしますか？また、それはなぜですか？」
竹内さん: 「私にとって一番大きなアドバンテージは、今現在日本に住んでいることで、国内のビジネス区域が急激に成長していることです。東京オリンピックの効果で、多くの会社が自社の商品を宣伝する機会を見つけようという気持ちが高まっています。東京オリンピックは今から５年後ですが、実は今が2020年までにミス・スプラナショナルのブランドネームを確立させるための機会を掴むのに適した時期であると言うことができます。もし、私が２０１５ミス・スプラナショナルに選ばれたら、日本のメディアが私の世界各地での活動を取材し、その途中（過程）で日本の企業が大きなサポートを世界中から受けることができるようになる自信があります。私はミス・スプラナショナルが、今までと違う出演の仕方やメディアに利益を与えることができるようにするため最善を尽くします。なぜなら、このミスコンは今私たちが本当に必要としていて、ビューティークイーンができることを人々に伝え、理解してもらうことができるからです」
Q: 「まさに今、ミス・インターナショナル・クイーン・オブ・コーヒーの内田有理さんが活躍しているようにですか？」
竹内さん: 「その通りです！有理さんは私の友人で、彼女が今までに達成したことを見て下さい。クイーン・オブ・コーヒーの大会は有理さんが勝つまではほとんど知られていませんでしたが、 有理さんは今あちこちで活躍していて、自信を持ってサッシュとクラウンを身に付けています。コロンビアのコーヒー業界のことを考えると、すぐに彼女のことが思い浮かぶようになりました。コーヒー業者とコーヒーショップは彼女に商品を宣伝してもらいたいと思っていて、今現在、西日本最大手のコーヒー業者の顔は彼女です。私が伝えたいと思っていることは、日本人にとって何かで勝つことはとても大きな意味を持ち、結果を出して初めて大きな注目を集めます。それは私たちの文化や考え方の一部となっています」
Q: 「日本国内でビューティークイーンへの一番の誤解は何だと思いますか？」
竹内さん: 「日本国内ではミスコンへの出場者はよく、女性をさらに美しく見せる、またはさらなる減量（ダイエット）のための商品やサービスなどの宣伝に起用されます。中にはうわべだけのものもあります。私は決してそれが悪いと言いたいのではなく、日本国内のミスコンが社会へどれだけ貢献しているのだろう？と疑問に思うことがあります。 私はこういった、ビューティークイーンはうわべだけで、スポンサーの言いなりになるといった間違った印象を変えたいと思っています。 現在クイーンのAsha Bhatさんについて勉強し、さらにミス・スプラナショナルに惹かれました。彼女はスポンサーの身勝手な要求などに惑わされることなど一度もなく、優勝者として自分のタイトルとクラウンを守り、自分のハートで活動し大きな仕事を成し遂げました。だからこそ、私はミス・スプラナショナルを素晴らしいミスコンとして日本に紹介したいと思っています」
Q: 「世界大会で勝った後にサポートする予定のチャリティー活動はありますか？」
竹内さん: 「ミス・スプラナショナルにはクイーンになったらこれをしなければならないといったはっきりした仕事はないと聞きました。２０１５年のクイーンに輝いたら、そのクラウンで何をするかは自分次第ということになります。もし、幸いにも私がそのクラウンを手にすることができたら、 世界各地のJICAオフィスと連絡を取り合って、様々な国を訪れたいと思っています。現在のクイーンであるAsha Bhatさんのことを調べると、彼女はミス・スプラナショナルのウィナーとして、ミャンマー、タイ、モーリシャスなどの国から何度も招待を受け、現地を訪れていたことが分かりました。何をしたいかは個人の自発性が鍵となるので、日本国内の組織と連絡を取り合い、社会的な活動やチャリティー活動を世界各地で、現地の人々と関わり時間を共に過ごしながら行っていきたいと思っています。そのためには、まず自分の自発性を日本国内で高めなければなりません。現在、日本国内では学校でのいじめや１０代での自殺率が急激に増えているので、いじめ反対キャンペーンのスポークスパーソンにまずはなりたいです」
Q: 「最後に、ファンの方にメッセージをお願いします」
