Watch out Miss World! A Cambridge law graduate named Louisa Mak Ming-sze will be representing Hong Kong in the pageant this year. She got all the attention when during the pageant’s second round of interview, she refused to answer a question about the territories’ reform package. Democracy in Hong Kong is said to be threatened by the communist mainland China with efforts from Beijing to undermine it. Mak, however, said she believed in democracy and the freedom to vote.

Mak told reporters at the time that she would like to become a politician and even the Hong Kong chief executive one day. “I want to become an influential [person], not only for the pay,” she had said.

This year’s Miss World pageant will be held in Sanya, China. The reigning Miss World, Rolene Strauss of South Africa will pass along the crown.
