A Venezuelan model who moved to Malta three years ago was crowned Miss Universe Malta 2019 during the finals held July 12.

Teresa Ruglio, 23, who represented Sliema, will represent now represent the country at the 2019 Miss Universe competition.

Ruglio moved to the island in 2016, “as the political and economic situation in her native Venezuela worsened, and began learning English from scratch on her arrival,” reported Times of Malta.

Nicola Grixti (Gzira) and Nicole Mallia (Naxxar) placed first and second runners-up, respectively. Sarah Camilleri (Mqabba) and Rebecca Pace (Birzebugga) completed the Top 5.
