In the past few weeks, prior to the Miss Universe 2015 finals, we have seen the Hot Picks swing from one end to another. We have seen candidates rise and fall but in the end almost everyone agreed to one thing – Miss Universe Vietnam Huong Pham is a Top 5 material.

There is broad consensus among beauty analysts that with her fierce performance during the prelims – her eye catching gown and vivacious catwalk – Huong Pham is poised to be in the semis with no hindrances at all in sight. No problem, right? Except for one thing – what was expected did not happen.

The biggest problem of Vietnam is its sash weight. There is only one Vietnamese woman who became a semifinalist at Miss Universe. As such, the sash weight of Vietnam is pretty light. Plus, Vietnam has to battle one strategic hindrance – its delegates usually precedes the heavyweights USA and Venezuela.  Similarly, in 2013, Vietnam was the last contestant and had a greater risk of being overlooked.

The non-inclusion of Huong Pham at Top 15 has truly one plausible reason. Since she gave her best performance and missosologists all say she is a Top 15 and even Top 5 material, sash weight is the sole culprit. It is important for Vietnam to understand its precarious standing whenever it competes at Miss Universe. Truly, this is a challenge that must be dealt head-on, and the country should conduct formal pageant annually and ensure that there is a rigorous training regime for its winner. Vietnam after all, despite its weak sash weight, has great beauty queens at par with its much successful neighbors.
