Cristina Mariel Ríos from San Sebastian has been named the new Miss Earth Puerto Rico 2021, replacing former winner Valerie Vigoreaux who relinquished the title due to differences with the organizers.

Rios, a 19-year-old environmental chemistry student and founder of Eco Amigos Puerto Rico, will head on to represent the island in the next edition of the Miss Earth pageant. She was named Miss Earth Water Puerto Rico during the finals of Miss Earth Puerto Rico 2021 contest held last year.

“Excited and grateful! I am the new Miss Earth Puerto Rico 2021. Thank you all for your support from day one, I promise to carry the name of my beautiful island up high. From San Sebastián to the world,” she posted on Facebook.

The organization announced on Saturday that Vigoreaux would no longer be the representative of the island in the international pageant.

“With the best of spirits, I clarify that my determination to leave the Miss Earth Puerto Rico pageant is due to the impossibility of formalizing a final agreement with its directors. The understandings, verbal agreements and representations between the parties could not be formalized for the benefit of all parties involved,” Vigoreaux said on Instagram.

Puerto Rico bagged its first Miss Earth crown in 2019 with Nellys Pimentel. It currently ranks 15th in Missosology Big5 Ranking. Missosology.Org
