In 1986, Denmark almost won the Miss International crown. Pia Rosenberg Larsen was Denmark’s candidate and she remains the highest ranking Danish beauty at Miss International. But things are getting better in Denmark. Previous titleholders, including Pia, are collaborating with the current organizers to ensure that Danish beauties will shine once more.
Sara Skals Danielsen, Miss International Denmark 2016, will soon fly to Japan to do some unfinished business – bringing the Miss International crown to Denmark. She will use Pia’s legacy as her inspiration and she recently talked to Missosology to share more about herself.
Tell us about the town where you grew up.
Actually I grew up on a farm, 2 miles from the nearest city, where me and my sisters went to school. The city, has around 1 000 -2 000 citizens. I remember it as a very safe childhood. Everyone knew each other, and I remember it as very idyllic, living at the country, with a lot of animals, horse riding and so on. I love the big city now, but I also love visiting my parents and take a few days away from all the noise and chaos you sometimes fell in the big cities.
What are your qualities that you think will make you the next Miss International?
I know myself and stand by who I am. I grew up being a bit of a shy girl and not very loud. I used to hate that side of myself but I have learned to work with it. I know myself better now than I ever had. Knowing yourself and standing by your weakness make you a strong titleholder.
At the same time, I am aware of society and I have strong opinion about what we can do better especially according to healthcare on a word wide level. I am good at people and communicating. – I think I am that, because of my job as a nurse. You have to make a relation with people, and you have to try to understand their life and situation.
Who among the Miss International titleholders do you admire most and why?
I think it would be Edymar Martinez. I think she is truly beautiful and have a kind spirit. I haven’t met her in person, but I know people who has, and they tell me the same thing – that she is kind and true in character.
Can you tell us what is inside your bag?
I was just looking in my bag, and yes, a lady’s handbag, can tell a lot about her they say. Yesterday, I had a nightshift at the Intensive Care Unit where I work and with this, you need lots of coffee! So I have a bag of coffee, my nurse sign, wallet and a lip gloss.
What is your breakfast like?
It is varied. I try to be healthy, and I think that the breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Normally I would like to have eggs and some fruit. But sometimes, when you have to be at the hospital at 7 am, you don’t have that much time to prepare a good meal, then I just go for oat meal.
Why did you decide to join face of Denmark and what was the feeling when they named you as Miss International Denmark?
I think it is important to develop as a person all the time and this competition really helped me to get out of my comfort zone and grow. I have learned so much about myself. Some people told me that they were surprised that I joined a competition such as this. And that was also why I did it! To show people, that you don’t have to be a specific type and that you don’t have to fit into a specific box. You just have to be you, and believe in yourself. Believe that you are unique and that you can do it!
When they named me as Miss International Denmark, it was like living a dream. Actually I didn’t expect to win a title. Of course, you have to believe that you have a chance but at the same time I am also a very humble person. I told myself from the beginning that if I didn’t get a title, I still won because I was there, at the stage, doing something I could never have imagined myself doing 5 years ago. So I was just in shock and I could feel the adrenalin running through my blood, thinking, “Sara, you nailed it! You are going to Tokyo!” I love traveling, and when I was I Bangkok working as a nurse, I met Japanese people at the hospital, telling me about their culture and country. I can’t wait to go!
How do you see yourself 10 years from now?
In 10 years, I would like to be teaching and educating other nurses. I would also like to have a family and a home.
What is your favorite book and why?
I actually don’t have a favorite book. When a was a child I loved reading, but now I can’t finish a book. I always start but then after some days I forget the book and never finished it. Maybe it is because I never found the right book for me or that I have too many projects I find more interesting than reading. Who knows.
