Australia has made it to the Top 10 of the Miss Universe seven times in the last eight years, with four Top 5 appearances. This year’s Miss Universe Australia, Caris Tiivel, definitely has big shoes to fill but the 23-year-old Perth native if up for the challenge.

She took some time off the holidays for a quick Beauty Talks with Missosology. Let us get to know more about her, her preparations for the upcoming pageant next month in the Philippines, and her all-time favorite Miss Universe titleholder.

Tell us something that most people don’t know much about you.
Aside from the usual “girly things” I enjoy fishing, watching a good game of Australian Rules football and a game of backyard cricket.

What is the biggest mistake you made in your life and what did you do to make it right?
When I was younger I lacked self-confidence and doubted my capabilities. Through my Miss Universe experience I have a new found confidence and have learnt that I am a strong woman who is capable of achieving my dreams and aspirations. If you believe in yourself anything is possible.

How would you describe your country to your fellow contestants?
It’s the best country in the world! It is full of diversity amongst our beautiful landscapes, climate and cultures. It is a country of great opportunities and freedom of speech. I love the relaxed, easygoing lifestyle I live here.

What is your beauty secret?
My secret formula to beauty is to always have a smile on my face! 🙂

What is the most difficult thing you did to prepare for the Miss Universe pageant? Why did you do that?
The most difficult part of the pageant for me is handling nerves whilst public speaking, which would be the same for most people. I helped to overcome this through training, completing a NIDA course and assisting compering at Miss Universe Australia events.

Social media seem to play a major role in pageantry nowadays. Do you think this is advantageous to you? Why or why not?
Social media definitely plays a big part in today’s society. I think it will be advantageous for all contestants as it allows us to invite people into our world, show them who we are, our personality and what we stand for.

Some people think that beauty pageants like Miss Universe are degrading to women. Convince them that they are wrong.
I personally believe as a contestant of Miss Universe that pageants are actually very empowering to women. The emphasis is not on superficial beauty but encapsulates all that a woman can be. Elegance, personality, professionalism and compassion. The pageant has allowed me to develop my skills, confidence and the platform to help others and give back to the community. To me it has been nothing but an uplifting, inspiring and empowering experience.

Who is your all-time favorite Miss Universe and why?
I know it may sound bias but my all-time favourite Miss Universe would have to be Jennifer Hawkins (Miss Universe 2004) from Australia. I admire how she has supported many charities following her reign as Miss Universe and has been a consummate professional throughout her career. She seems very down to earth and to this day remains an Aussie icon.

What qualities do you feel you have that would make you a great Miss Universe?
I am a dedicated, caring and compassionate person who truly wants to make a difference to the lives of others. These key qualities I believe form the foundation to being a great ambassador and upholding the highly respected title of Miss Universe.

Lastly, a message for all your supporters at Missosology.
