The snafu that happened at the conclusion of Miss Universe 2015 created a schism that pitted one bloc of Miss Universe fans and contestants against another bloc. Most from the group that supported Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach insisted that the first runner-up Ariadna Gutiérrez should have played it cool and that in the spirit of sportsmanship, should have relinquished something that was not hers in the first place and move on.

Easy right? But try putting yourself in the shoes of Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez. She basically competed in a contest that a few months ago, the earlier owner called her race as rapists and drug couriers. She was also competing against huge odds as the current winner is from her country and in a contest like Miss Universe, a back-to-back win is pretty rare. In fact it happened only once and it took the superpower nation of Venezuela a lot of effort to make it possible. On top of all these, Ariadna’s country was in a state of mourning as their beloved first ever Miss Universe, Luz Marina Zuluaga, died recently.

Host Steve Harvey said he made a mistake when reading the card and and Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is the actual winner.

All of these circumstances created a highly emotional situation for Ariadna and for all Colombians in general. So, when Ariadna was called as Miss Universe 2015, it was as if all the adversities that they experienced were all relieved with this one big victory – an impossible victory well in fact. That two-minute moment where Ariadna was wearing the DIC blue crown while waving the Colombian flag was supposed to be the moment of all moments after all the sorrows and humiliations that they have experienced in the past few months.

Except, it was another form of humiliation. Granted that it was an error and that the crown wasn’t hers, it was a cruel joke to tell a beautiful beauty queen and her expectant nation a flat out lie. Basically they were given false hope and they were absolutely humiliated before the eyes of billions of people. So, can we really expect them to play sports and just move on in a snap? And here’s an even more beautiful question: What if Pia was crowned as Miss Universe for just two minutes and then the crown was taken away from her and given to Ariadna? How would the Philippines react? I leave that question for all of you to answer.
