With her eyes moist with tears, Edymar Martinez first hugged herself and then clench both of her fists up in the air as she savored her hard-earned victory. The crowd politely obliged and burst into applause. Then the majestic red crown encrusted with pearls was neatly placed on her head. The ethereal beauty of Edymar who represented Venezuela, swept the judges off their feet and thus awarded with the Miss International title.
Venezuela’s 7th Miss International crown came into fruition and it was a moment of swirling emotions for Edymar. It was won largely through her shapely body as she was awarded with the highest honors reserved to the sexiest of them all. But, was it also possible that the unique gown which was seemingly unlike any other that we’ve seen at Miss International, a key to her victory?
Hugo Espina, the designer of the gown, should be the name to be remembered on this pageant year and beyond. Though he is pretty much famous in his native Venezuela, he is a designer that is barely recognized outside of his home country. Hugo had been designing gowns for Miss Venezuela contestants and in particular he enjoyed designing gowns for Edymar who represented the state of Anzoátegui at the nationals.
What Hugo designed for Edymar at Miss International was something that was outside of the box. The soft white gown was both elegant and playful yet really it was more of a simple laced white wardrobe. Amazingly, it worked just right! The secret? The gown was generously beaded with rhinestones and white pearls that created a perfect match with the Miss International crown.
Edymar’s gown may not be the apple of so many eyes but it complemented well her youthful beauty. When the ceremonial cape was placed upon her, it was as if it molded with her gown. All the perceived oddities of its design – bell-ended sleeves, linear patterns and all – simply melted away. Truly, it was at the moment of Edymar’s crowning that everyone saw the genius of Hugo Espina’s creative mind.
