Jayathi De Silva has been crowned as Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2016 on August 17. She will represent Sri Lanka in the next edition of Miss Universe which will be held in the Philippines.Her participation marks the comeback of Sri Lanka at Miss Universe after the country withdrew last year. Jayathi is a scientist and a model and is pursuing her studies in the United Kingdom. She is 26 years of age and stands 5’9″.
Sri Lanka is yet to win the Miss Universe crown. Many observers believe that Sri Lankan beauties are in par with that of their much bigger and much successful neighbor – India. However, they also believe that due to the sash weight of Sri Lanka, many of its beauties were largely ignored. They cite the example of Jacqueline Fernandez who represented Sri Lanka at Miss Universe 2006. She was largely unnoticed at the pageant but is now one of the most popular and most successful Bollywood actress.
