Thailand should get its act together. It seems the mood in Thailand is always full of cynicism and pessimism and this has been going on for decades. Since the democratic institutions were put in place, Thailand saw 12 coup d’etat – the most in any country in East Asia. It seems that the Thais are not particularly fond of reveling in the political process and the bad thing about this is that it is contagious. The pessimism and cynicism in Thai politics spilled over to the pageantry world.
Echoing on what the Thais did to its Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Miss Universe Thailand 2014 Weluree Ditsayabut was pressured to resign after a barrage of cyber bullying from the Thai public including death threats. The press would like to point out her remarks about executing the pro-Shinawatra crowd as the main reason on why Weluree was bullied but the truth is, Thais simply don’t like her. This is the height of chaos not only from a political point of view but also from a pageantry point of view.
Thais as it seems are impatient people. The pressure that they put on Weluree is a clear cut sign of desperation for the Miss Universe crown. Her subsequent resignation will not bring any benefits to Thailand in the long term. It would scare other potential delegates from participating and all of the screening and selecting processes will be jeopardized. Pageant organizers will be forced to select a “safe” delegate instead of exploring possibilities of finding a rough gem that they can hone. If they had accused of Weluree as fat, what is the use of thousands of gyms and training facilities across the kingdom? Indeed, there is without doubt that the disrespect of the Thais towards a crowned beauty queen will adversely affect its pageantry scene and its overall chances at the Big4 Pageants now and in the future.
