Sydney Batters was crowned Miss New Zealand 2020 during the finals held October 11.

The 19-year-old nursing student at the Auckland University of Technology will represent the country at the 60th Miss International beauty pageant in Japan next year.

“Still can’t believe I was crowned Miss New Zealand last night. I feel so privileged to have been apart of such a journey with so many amazing girls! Congratulations to everyone who won awards yesterday, I am proud of every single one of you,” Batters wrote in an Instagram post.

Batters aspires to become a mental health nurse with the hopes of being able to give back to her small home community and Aotearoa.

Also crowned in the same event was Miss New Zealand Intercontinental 2020 Arielle Keil, making history as New Zealand’s first transgender beauty queen.

Other winners were Miss New Zealand Tourism International 2020 Emma Wilding, Miss New Zealand Charm International 2020 Tamanna Feroz, Miss New Zealand Crystal Angel International 2020 Chloe Drew, Miss New Zealand Tourism World 2020 Jahvaya Wheki, Miss New Zealand Tourism Global 2020 Maddy Young, and Miss New Zealand Tourism Metropolitan 2020 Caitlan Thompson.
