Pageant veteran Ornella Gunasekara will once again wear the “Sri Lanka” sash in the international arena, as she was crowned Miss Universe Sri Lanka 2018 during the finals held September 25 at The Hilton Hotel in Colombo.
The 26-year-old model bested 10 other candidates for the t itle and the right to represent her country at the 2018 Miss Universe competition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand in December. She also bagged the Model of the Year, Miss Congeniality, Miss Popular and Miss Confidence special awards.
“I first tried out this pageant when I was 18. I’m 26 now and I’m so honoured and thrilled to have worked hard and persevered and finally I got the opportunity to represent Sri Lanka,” said Gunasekara. “I will work hard during the next two to three months to bring the Miss Universe crown to Sri Lanka.”
Marion Wettasinghe and Natalee Fernando placed first and second runners-up, respectively.
Gunasekara first represented her country at the 2010 Miss International pageant but was unplaced. Five years later, she competed in Miss Grand International and finished in the Top 10. In 2016, she joined Miss Supranational and placed 3rd runner-up.
