Big5 Ranking for Pageant Year 2023

The year 2023 went as quickly as it came. Sadly, as the 2024 started, there’s that feeling of gloom and doom that is exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Yemen and Gaza. It is an established fact that geopolitics do affect the world of beauty pageants. Russia for example is still welcome to participate at Miss Universe and Miss Earth but due to sanctions and restrictions, it is unable to send a delegate at Miss Supranational and Miss International.

The Miss Universe 2023 pageant was also at the centerstage of political developments in Central America. It was after all, held in El Salvador and it was meant to show the world that the country is safe and progressing under the rule of Nayid Bukele. Meanwhile, in neighboring Nicaragua, there was a crackdown of celebrations when Sheynnis Palacios was crowned. Nicaragua’s authoritarian president, Daniel Ortega, got paranoid that Sheynnis will become a symbol of dissent and has prevented the beauty queen from staging her homecoming.

The sad news in 2023 is that Miss World failed to stage a pageant – yet again. They are now planning to have it this year. Let’s hope that it will materialize. Pageants nowadays are struggling to find a host country and it is sad that it is happening to the oldest and largest among the Big5 pageants.

As for the Big5 Ranking, there are some notable changes. Albania, Kazakhstan and Vietnam improved their standing and it is expected that they will fare well this 2024. A separate post will soon announce on which country produced the best results across all major international pageants. Which country do you think will be bestowed by the title of Performer of the Year 2023?
