Big5 Ranking before the 71st Miss Universe

Since the dawn of civilization, human beings have quantified things around them. Ranging from personal (how much calories you ate today) to universal (tracking the annual increase of global temperatures), numbers rule our lives and we are somehow obsessed about it. In the world of beauty pageants, putting a numerical value to something that is highly subjective has long been an enigma. Even more mysterious is how do we determine which country is the strongest at the Big5 pageants and which one has the highest chance of winning.

The Big5 Ranking of Missosology has been constant in its rules and objectives since the day of its inception. Analyzing the ranking and numbers associated with it gave us insight and trends like the rapid ascent of South Africa and the Philippines. In this updated ranking after Miss International 2022 there some interesting development. For example, Cabo Verde went from 186^th place to 154^th while Palestine climbed 39 places and is now ranked 165^th.

There are some interesting take aways from all these numbers if we delve deeper. Take the case of Korea which is consistently in the Top 20 of the ranking (thanks to its numerous semifinals placement at Miss International) despite winning just one Big5 crown prior to 2022. It may not make sense at a glance but the numbers presaged the country’s victory at Miss Earth.

Germany too is a similar case. Long considered as an ancient beauty superpower as most of its crowns were won prior to 1990 (one Miss Universe, two Miss World and two Miss International) the country continued to hang on within the Top 20 for years. Its victory at Miss International this year somehow justified its ranking.

All of these trends can’t be captured if we were to rank the countries solely on the crowns won or if we refresh the scores every decade. Still, putting numerical value to a highly subjective enterprise is not a foolproof way to predict outcomes let alone the winners. Beauty pageants can sometimes be extremely difficult to anticipate and no amount of data can help beauty experts and analysts. Needless to say, the beauty of pageantry is in its enigma.
