Pageant veteran Swe Zin Htet from Kayin state was crowned Miss Universe Myanmar 2019 in glittering ceremonies held May 31 at the Novotel Max Hotel in Yangon.
The 21-year-old model, who represented Hpa-an, edged out 24 other candidates for the right to compete in the next edition of the Miss Universe competition.
This will be the second time Swe Zin Htet will wear the Myanmar sash in a Big5 pageant. In 2016, she won Miss Golden Land Myanmar and competed in Miss Supranational, where she finished in the Top 10 and was awarded Miss Personality.
Hmwe Thet (Myeik) finished first runner-up, while Htet Thiri Zaw (Mandalay) placed second runner-up. Htun Palal Yadanar (MinBu), Lin Htet Htet Kyaw (Myitkyina), and Su Su Sandi (Pathein) were third, fourth, and fifth runners-up, respectively.
The 2019 edition marks the seventh time the Miss Universe Myanmar competition was held in the once-isolated Southeast Asian nation. In 2013, the country send Moe Set Wine to Miss Universe after a half-a-century hiatus. So farm no Myanmar representative has placed in the semifinals of the Miss Universe pageant.
