Australian-Chinese Francesca Hung was crowned the new Miss Universe Australia on June 28, besting 31 other candidates for the right to represent the country at the next Miss Universe competition.
The 24-year-old sociology graduate from the University of Sydney will vie for the crown last won for Australia by Jennifer Hawkins in 2004. Born to a Chinese father and Irish-Australian mother, Hung is now finishing her masters in publishing at the University of Sydney.
“I grew up in an Anglo-Saxon area, and I felt like the odd one out because of my heritage. I was embarrassed and struggled to accept it,” Hung was quoted by news.com.au.
“I hope this is an opportunity to show people if you look or feel different, you are a true representation of the Australian culture. What set me apart was my cultural background, and a bit different for [the] Miss Universe competition.”
Jasmine Stringer placed first runner-up while Tasha Ross finished second runner-up. Baylee Saltmarsh and Emily Tokic were third and fourth runners-up, respectively.
