김제니 – 대한민국 최초의 5대 메이저 세계 미인대회 우승자

Finally, Korea did it! For the first time ever, a Korean beauty queen won a major international beauty pageant title. The victory of Jenny Kim at Miss Supranational 2017 underscores the effort that South Korea has put forward in order to be recognized in the world of beauty pageants. Neighboring countries like Japan and China have already registered victories in the Big5 Pageants. Japan has already two Miss Universe winners and one Miss International title while China has two Miss World winners.
드디어 한국이 해냈다. 최초로 대한민국의 미인대회 참가자가 ‘5대 메이저 세계 미인대회’ (해외에서는 ‘Big5’ 라고 명칭한다. 이하 Big5로 명칭함.) 에서 우승을 거머쥐었다. 김제니의 미스 슈프라내셔널 2017 우승은 대한민국으로 하여금 Big5 미인대회에서 두각을 드러내게 하였다. 대한민국의 이웃 나라 일본과 중국은 이미 Big5 미인대회에서 (미스 유니버스, 미스 월드, 미스 인터내셔널, 미스 어스, 미스 슈프라내셔널) 우승한 전적이 있다. 일본은 2명의 미스 유니버스와 1명의 미스 인터내셔널 대회에서 우승을 하였고, 중국은 2명의 미스 월드 우승자가 있다.
Korea has missed so many chances at the major international beauty pageants. In 1988, the country almost had a Miss Universe and a Miss World! Jang Yoon-jeong competing in Taipei came in second to Thailand’s Porntip Nakhirunkanok. Meanwhile Yeon-hee Choi was defeated by Iceland’s Linda Petursdottir and she setteled for first runner-up position. At Miss International, Korea also came in second in two instances. In 2000, Shon Tae-young was not only the Miss Photogenic but was also the first runner-up. The same thing also happened to Seo Eun-mi in 2009!
대한민국은 Big5 미인대회에서 기회를 놓치고 있었다. 미스 코리아 조직회의 미스 유니버스와 미스 월드 참가 자격이 회수 되기 이전의 이야기로 돌아가 보자. 1988년에는 미스 유니버스와 미스 월드 타이틀을 거머쥘 뻔 하였다. 미스 코리아 1987 진(眞) 장윤정은 미스 유니버스 1988대회에 참가해서 2위에 그치면서 태국의 ‘폰팁 나키룬카녹(Porntip Nakhirunkanok)’이 우승하는 것을 지켜봐야 했고, 미스 코리아 1987 선(善) 최연희도 역시 미스 월드 1988 대회에서 2위를 하게 되어, 아이슬란드의 ‘린다 페터스도디르(Linda Petursdottir)’가 우승을 하는 것을 지켜봐야만 했었다. 미스 인터내셔널에서의 대한민국도 2번의 2위를 한 전적이 있다. 미스 코리아 2000 미(美) 손태영은 미스 인터내셔널 2000 대회에서 미스 포토제닉을 수상하면서 2위를 하게 되었고, 미스 코리아 2009 선(善) 서은미 역시도 미스 인터내셔널 2009 대회에서도 2위에 그쳤다.
The story of Korea at Big5 pageants proves that the country has a lot of potential and it could have won a long time ago. It seems luck was just not on its side. The Miss Korea pageant has made a lot of experiments and innovations including hiring Ines Ligron back in 2008 and rethinking the traditional styling approach like what they did with Honey Lee at Miss Universe 2007. But what seems to work with Jenny Kim is her exposure at Miss Universe 2016!
Big5 미인대회에서 대한민국은 많은 우승가능성이 있는 잠재력을 보여주었고, 우승을 할 수도 있었던 적이 오래전부터 있어왔고, 운이 좋지 않았던 것으로 보이기도 한다. 미스 코리아 대회는 많은 경험과 혁신을 거듭하며, 2008년에는 前 미스 유니버스 재팬의 내셔널 디렉터 였던 ‘이네스 리그론(Ines Ligron)’을 미스 코리아 2007 진(眞) 이지선의 미스 유니버스 2008 참가를 위해 코치로 고용하기도 하였으나, 결국 2016년부터 미스 유니버스와 미스 월드 참가 자격을 상실하였다. 그렇다면 김제니는 어땠을까? 미스 유니버스 2016 대회 참가 경력으로 거슬러 올라가 보자.
Jenny Kim competed at Miss Supranational 2017 as an experienced beauty pageant contestant. Her Miss Congeniality title at Miss Universe 2016 certainly gave boost to her confidence. She revealed that her greatest strength is her multicultural upbringing which is not common in Korea and even at times scorned upon. She grew up in Indonesia and can even speak Bahasa Indonesia fluently. She is also a fluent English speaker which is very essential considering that one of the stumbling blocks of a Miss Korea at major international pageants is the interview segment.
김제니는 미스 슈프라내셔널 2017 대회에 참가 하였고, 이전에도 미스 유니버스 2016 대회에 참가한 경력이 있다. 김제니는 미스 유니버스 2016 대회에서 우정상(Miss Congeniality) 수상을 하며 자신감을 얻게 되었다. 김제니는 다문화가 대한민국에서 잘 받아들여지지 않았던 시기에 인도네시아에서 어린시절을 보냈고, 인니어(Bahasa Indonesia)와 영어를 유창하게 말할 수 있다. 미인대회의 마지막에는 꼭 인터뷰 심사를 거쳐야 하는데, 세계 미인대회에서는 미스 코리아가 영어로 대답할 수 없어서 고충을 겪기도 하였다. 그런데 김제니는 영어로 유창하게 답변하여 우승을 거머쥐었다.
Before embarking at beauty pageants, Jenny Kim was a model and at the same time taking up two majors – one for International Office Administration and one for English Language and Literature – at Ewha Women’s University. She actually finished as first runner-up at Miss World Korea 2015 pageant and was simply appointed to compete at Miss Universe 2016 and later at Miss Supranational 2017.
김제니는 미인대회에 입성하기 이전에, 모델로 활동하기도 하였고, 이화여자대학교에서 국제사무학과 영문학을 전공하고 있었다 그 이후에 미스 월드 코리아 2015 대회에서 2위를 하게 되었고, 미스 유니버스 코리아 2017대회가 열리기 전에 미스 유니버스 코리아 2016으로 임명되어, 미스 유니버스 2016과 미스 슈프라내셔널 2017 대회에 참가 하였다.
Quite unfortunate though that Jenny Kim’s victory came at the time when her country is pre-occupied with bigger issues. Political and security concerns are in the minds of the Korean people these days and their triumph at Miss Supranational 2017 can’t even distract them. Still, it is a milestone. It is a proof that the beauty of Korean women could excel and could be recognized and it could have a domino effect. A Korean Miss Universe or Miss World or Miss Earth or Miss International will surely add more feathers to the cap of Korean pageantry. It won’t be long then for Korea to become one of the superpower countries in the world of pageantry.
안타깝게도, 현재 대한민국 국민들은 김제니의 미스 슈프라내셔널 2017 우승보다는 사회 문제에 대해 좀더 관심을 두고 있다. 정치와 보안이 그들의 최대 이슈이며, 미스 슈프라내셔널 2017 우승은 주목받지 못하고 있다. Big5 미인대회에서 대한민국은 중요한 단계에 있다. 김제니의 우승으로 인하여 앞으로도 대한민국의 여성들도 다른 나라의 여성들보다 뛰어날 수 있다는 것을 보여줄 수도 있고, 대한민국의 미인대회 참가자들도 다른 5대 메이저 세계 미인대회인 미스 유니버스, 미스 월드, 미스 어스, 미스 인터내셔널에서도 대한민국이 두각을 드러낼 수 있을 것이다. 대한민국이 세계 미인대회에서 파워하우스(세계 미인대회에서 항상 순위권에 드는 나라들을 뜻함)가 될 날이 머지 않았다.
