For most Uruguayans, Miss World, or in Spanish, Miss Mundo, is associated with Katja Thomsen Grien. It was in 2000 when Katja gave this South American nation a sliver of hope at the pageant. She was famously known for handling a rather difficult question given by Miss India Priyanka Chopra, who eventually won the title. Katja meanwhile settled for Top 5 – the highest placement for her country to date at Miss World.

This year, Uruguay will be represented by a 21 year old blonde beauty from Montevideo. Her name is Melina Carballo. She once tried her luck at Miss Universe Uruguay but failed. Later, she represented her country at various minor pageants. Melina Carballo is a communications and journalism student. She hopes to become a model someday. She stands 5’9″ tall.
This year’s Miss World pageant will witness Stephanie Del Valle of Puerto Rico pass her crown and title to the new winner. This will be held once again in Sanya in the People’s Republic of China. Singapore meanwhile will host various pre-final activities.
