The moment she stepped onstage modelling a fabric for a Chinese company, Anyela captured the imagination of many pageant analysts. What was revealed during the show was that her beauty is very much prominent even when she wears little or no make-up at all.

A cancer survivor, Anyela is not just your typical Venezuelan beauty queen. While she is well-trained and carries a strong sash, her beauty speaks more about Europe rather than Latin America. She is one of the Top Model finalists and truly a strong contender for the award considering her shapely body tone and a tall physique.

Unfortunately, the trend that started after Ivian Sarcos was crowned Miss World kicked in. Venezuela is suffering a long drought at Miss World – its longest since 1969. It seems that Osmel Sousa is running out of ideas as even staging a separate Miss Mundo Venezuela pageant did not bear fruit as expected.

Whatever happened as to why Anyela failed to be in the semis would remain a mystery. There are so many strong candidates that were left behind and there are so many mediocre ones who made it. Miss World is difficult to analyze in many cases and this year is no different. Even people are scratching their heads with the overall results.

But perhaps one telling trend is how most of the Latinas were ignored at Miss World 2015. No Latin American delegate made it to the Top 11 and at the Top 20, only two are from the region. This trend is perhaps the most obvious reason why Anyela failed to be in the semis.

If only Anyela was in the semis, she could easily wow the judges with her natural beauty. If only she was in the Top 5 she could have shared to the world the struggles of a cancer survivor. How she was ignored was a part of the larger trend of Latinas faring badly the Miss World pageant. It is perhaps the time for the region to recalibrate its strategy. For Venezuela, it is back to drawing board once again.
