The Miss Nederland 2020 finals took place on August 31 in Hilversum with Denise Speelman winning the top plum.

The 22-year-old beauty from Amsterdam bested nine other finalists for the title and the right to represent the Netherlands in the next edition of the Miss Universe competition.

Sophie Alink placed first runner-up.

With the title, Speelman hopes to raise awareness about eating disorders and body positivity, as she can speak from experience. “Regardless of a woman’s appearance, shape or origin, everyone should have the same opportunities. Whether it is eligible for a particular job or in social life, let’s embrace every woman and give the same chance in our society,” Speelman said in her bio.

Born and raised in Groningen, Speelman moved to Amsterdam where she now runs her styling company. She is no stranger to pageants as she won Miss Noord Nederland in 2014.

The Netherlands won the Miss Universe crown in 1989 with Angela Visser. It currently ranks 21st in Missosology Big5 Ranking. Missosology.Org; Photos from Miss Nederland page; AD
