The vitriolic comments against Miss Universe Philippines 2012 Janine Tugonon had been growing louder and louder by the day and while she had legions of fans, the haters seem to prevail. I read once in the forum days before the finals that Janine is the anointed one and at that time, it was all pure rumor. I then commented that should Janine win a lot of Missosology forumers will commit mass suicide. I did not mean it literally of course but I was right. The toxic and heightened negativity is the plat du jour these days but there is no doubt that when Miss Universe 2012 comes, the very same people who lambast Janine will become her die-hard supporters. By attacking Janine relentlessly and support her later is a form of suicide. How can her soon-to-be supporters expect a much favorable assessment of Janine if they themselves opened the can of worms? And to think that her haters want badly that third Miss Universe crown for the Philippines.
Sure, there are grains of truths that come with the attacks. Janine's body is not that ideal. Her beauty and styling are still naive and definitely a lot more stunning girls deserve the crown. But the most aggressive fans always wanted the best. Meanwhile, the Bb. Pilipinas Org wanted someone that they can train, hone and polish. Ill-formed bodies can be fixed by Slimmer's World. Communication skills and personality development can be improved. But I guess intellect is quite hard to acquire in a span of 7-8 months. Janine can be trained, honed and polished and she proved during the finals night that she is witty.
We all wanted the best to win, no doubt about that. But look who we sided in the past years - Cai Kuijpers, Patricia Tumulak...And yet Madame Stella Marquez de Araneta had other ideas and lately, hers is the winning idea. By questioning the wisdom of the doyenne of the local pageantry, we are seeing opposing views - one that begs for the best and the other is searching for a clean slate that can be molded, polished and honed. If it is about someone with a potential to be perfected later (like Shamcey who had its fair share of haters and doubters last year), Janine truly fits the bill. The best move for the loudest among the critics is to hold their guns for the moment and patiently wait for a brand new Janine in the months to come.
