of Korea, and 1st runners-up Pattaraporn Kanyamee of Thailand and Yu-Kai Lin of Chinese-Taipei.

MISTER Nepal, 23-year-old Niraj Baral, and Miss Korea, 22-year-old Sun Woo Kim, were crowned as 2006 Mister and Miss University International at the 28th annual coronation pageant held at the UP Theater last August 14.

Baral and Kim bested a field of 28 college student-delegates representing 14 countries worldwide at the international beauty and personality competition that aims to foster peace and harmony in a one-family world.

The coronation pageant was relatively low-keyed with only a handful of media people on hand to cover it but ran very smoothly (save for the long gaps) and was visually entertaining especially the national costume, talent and formal wear segments.

The opening parade of national costumes reflected the pageant’s mission of presenting a model of one world family with the delegates coming from the two sides of the audience entrance and merging on stage with members of the Kaisahan Dance Company in a burst of colors and cultures. The five male and five female pre-selected finalists for the talent portion who showcased their diverse skills in singing, dancing and playing musical instruments, awed the audience.

The formal wear segment was a sight to behold as the female delegates received a long-stemmed white rose from their male counterparts as the Philippine Women’s University’s Female Ensemble serenaded them with a medley of songs befitting the pageant’s peace-and-harmony theme. A video was also shown of the delegates’ service activity at Baseco compound where they assisted in building low-cost shelters for the area’s residents.

A heart-pinching highlight of the pageant was the lighting of candles for peace in solidarity with the citizens and delegates of Lebanon (who failed to arrive in Manila because of the current Israel-Lebanon war).

Hosted by Brad Turvey and Issa Litton, and anchored by Karel Marquez, the pageant’s panel of judges included Se. Joey Lina, Gov. Leonida Bayani Ortiz and Miss Asia Pacific International president Roberto de Venecia. Reigning Mutya ng Pilipinas-Tourism Int’l Vera Eumee Reiter also graced the affair as presentor.

The annual international pageant was first launched in 1978 in Tokyo and has traveled to many locales like Korea, Russia, the USA and the Philippines. This is the second time Manila is hosting the event, the first time being in 1997.

For the record, two female and five male delegates from the Philippines have won the coveted titles. They are: Albert Villadolid (Mr. University International 1982), Cecille Detlette (Miss University International 1986), Vincent Borromeo (Mr. University International 1987), Gabino Ramon G. Mejia (Mr. University International 1992), Melchor Zablan (Mr. University International 1995), Frederick A. Galang (Mr. University International 1996), and Mimilanie P. Lisondra (Miss University International 2001).
