Miss World 2008 Hot Picks : Week 5

In totality, this week’s Miss World Hot Picks can be summed up as similar to last week’s. The difference of course is that there are some surprises. Miss Ukraine Irina Zhuravskaya continues to have a solid lead and this is despite the fact that her country failed to host the pageant. The dynamics of Miss World 2008 has largely changed in the sense that it will no longer be held in an East European country. The last time that the pageant was held in East Europe, two East Europeans garnered the top two spots. Now that it is being held in South Africa, things will surely change. When Sun City, South Africa hosted the event from 1992-1995, the South African delegate always land at top ten (that was just top ten then of course). And simply because it is being in an African nation, it wouldn’t mean that African and black delegates will gave an edge. The 1992-1995 hosting of South Africa yielded only one black winner and that’s Miss Jamaica Lisa Hanna in 1993 (The 1992 crown went to a Soviet citizen, the 1994 to an Indian and 1995 to a Venezuelan).
Miss Ecuador Marjorie Cevallos is still in a formidable position and basically she made a comeback after placing sixth in the last Hot Picks. Russia of course is a surprise as she retreated in the 13th position. It could be that she will be ignored as a result of political backlash? It is remotely possible, but Russia’s image to world is not good nowadays. There is little movement for Miss Trinidad and Tobago Gabrielle Walcott or Miss Spain Patricia Rodriguez. Both have the crown clearly in sight. Resurgent this week is Miss Dominican Republic which is now on the 5th position after placing 12th in the last Hot Picks.
Miss Turkey Leyla Lydia Tugutlu, a strong candidate for the crown was largely ignored this week. Our beauty experts placed their bets on traditionally strong India and the most surprising thing in this list is Miss Norway Lene Egeli.
Note: As the news broke out that Amanda Ulfdotter will no longer participate at Miss World 2008, she was duly removed from the list and the 16th placer, Miss Slovakia, was included. Also, Miss Philippines Janina San Miguel was stripped of her title and now 17th placer Miss Belize is now on the list.
