Blessed with the harmonious fusion of traditional Africa and centuries of European colonialism, Namibia can rightfully boast a diversity of beauties. From Michelle McClean to Ndapewa Alfons, Namibians has made good impressions at international pageants. This year, Marichen Luiperth is Miss World-bound and she could surprise us all. Here she talks about her hometown, her dreams and her passions.

Describe the village or place where you grew up?

I am from the beautiful coastal town of Swakopmund. It is situated on the on the western side of Namibia along the Atlantic Ocean. It is a town of German heritage and until today there are still a lot of the historic German buildings. Swakopmund is one of the top five holiday resorts in Africa. What makes Swakopmund so unique is the 325m long jetty that the people from all over the world travel to come see. Also, the weird, peculiar, wonderful, strange, bizarre, fascinating, and of course, unique, are the kind of words that are used to describe the welwitschia plant that is found in the Namib Desert. It is one of the few things on Earth that we can truly claim to be one of a kind. Of course the beautiful Atlantic Ocean that stretches along the coastline as well as the Namib Desert.

Did you always dream to become Miss Namibia or did you have some other ambitions as a child?

I was interested in beauty pageants from a very tender age of eight, and I always dreamed of one being a symbol of beauty and intelligence for my country and this is it as Miss Namibia 2007.Apart from beauty and brains I also developed a keen interest of wanting to become a psychologist.

Describe the selection process during your national pageant.

Entries accompanied by head & full length photos were submitted from which the top 25 were chosen. The 25 ladies went through an interview with the judges from were the top 10 were selected for the title of Miss Namibia 2007. The 10 ladies further went and had a one on one interviews with the judges and they were judge based on confidence, poise, intelligence, personality and beauty. The points gathered from the interviews were reserved and later added to the points obtained from the judging in swimwear and evening gowns. From the total points gathered the top five ladies were chosen and each had different question asked by the judge of their choice and the top three were chosen based on their answers.

Name the beauty queen you had always admired and wish to emulate.

Michelle Mclean, Miss Namibia 1991 and was crowned Miss Universe 1992, a truly remarkable woman.

Namibia is a multi-cultural country. What is your opinion with regards to the racial relationships in your country?

It is a privilege to have been born in a country with such diverse cultures; this also makes our country so special. The relationships amongst our people, be it from the same cultural group or different cultural groups, is that the people are so keen to learn from one another and they work together if they want to achieve a common goal. We stand together and support one another in anyway we can. We are a happy family.

At any given moment, what would your handbag contain?

My identification card, a pen, cell phone, lip gloss and purse.

How do you define beauty?

Beauty is a reflection of two things, firstly the inner beauty which includes a warm personality/character, the ability to work with people, treating people with kindness and the outer natural beauty. The two should be combined with intelligence.

Lastly what is your message to Missosology.Org website visitors?

All the wonders you seek are within yourself. Let’s live in a way so that the undertaker gets sad if we die. If evil is spoken about you and it is true, correct yourself, if it is a lie laugh at it. Always forgive your enemies, nothing annoys them so much. Finally one thing you cannot recycle is wasted time.
