From Land Down Under, Caroline Pemberton is setting her eyes in winning the coveted Miss World 2007 crown but she’s more than just a pretty woman. Caroline is a smart Aussie girl who’s into psychology and with genuine concern for the underprivileged. Here we bring you up close and personal, Australia’s pride and representative to Miss World 2007.

Describe the village or place where you grew up?

I spent my childhood growing up on the waterfront at Lake Macquarie in Newcastle. It’s probably part of the reason why I love the outdoors so much. There were so many great things to do, from sailing to swimming and learning to water ski.

How would you describe yourself to the world?

I value people above all, so for me, my friends and family are incredibly important, and I’m at my happiest when I’m working with people in a humanitarian capacity. I’m down to earth, fun, and very outdoorsy! I love challenges, set goals and am generally a very driven and passionate person. I’m also known amongst my friends as a bit of a closet nerd - who studies a lot in her favorite outfit; tracksuit pants and boots!

How would you describe Australia to the other Miss World delegates?

As the most abundant country on the planet! Australia offers so much diversity, not only in our population and culture, but also it’s beautiful, unique flora and fauna and landscape. We enjoy one of the most temperate climates and are home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Australians are renowned for their generous, friendly, laid back attitude.

Did you always dream to become Miss Australia or did you have some other ambitions as a child?

Actually I never thought I’d enter a beauty pageant, let alone win one! It’s been an incredible journey for me. I first became involved in the competition after hearing about it’s amazing charity focus. I saw Miss World as a fun, unique platform to raise awareness and money for those things that I am truly passionate about. After getting involved and realizing that the competition is much more than a glamorous beauty competition, I have never hesitated or looked back. I would recommend to any young woman who wants to make a difference to consider participating in the pageant.

Describe the selection process during your national pageant

We spent three spectacular, but very busy, days at Star City Casino in the heart of Sydney. Over those few days the judges spend time getting to really know each of the contestants. We participated in the following judging categories:

Beauty with a Purpose; which is a report of those things that we have done in our local, state and national communities and beyond, for the benefit of those less fortunate. The activities are wide-ranging, from raising money for a particular charity, volunteering your time, motivating young people, spreading a valuable message to working for the environment.

Public Speaking: We are judged on our ability to communicate and impart what we believe onto an audience. We are asked to speak for three minutes to a panel of judges, who are looking for a young woman who is intelligent, confident, eloquent, and passionate.

Talent: This allows each contestant to demonstrate her own special skill or talent. The talents range, with some girls singing and dancing and others acting or doing a karate demonstration, even showing a DVD of themselves surfing, playing soccer or horse-riding.

Health Fitness & Swimwear: The competition strives to project and promote a healthy body image. All the contestants are different shapes and sizes, but each display traits of a healthy body, for instance, fitness. In fact we are judged on our fitness level and are all asked to participate in a grueling fitness session. The judges use the swimwear judging, which is handled very tastefully, to look for posture, tone, proportion and other traits of a healthy body.

Designer Evening gown: During this judging section, the girls and their dresses are judged. Each girl models a designer gown with a local Australian designer being awarded with. Best Design The girls are also judged on their elegance, poise and presence.

Social and Etiquette skills: People are always so surprised to find out how much the finalists all eat! We burn a lot of energy with such busy lifestyles and as a consequence all have a huge appetite. To make sure we all have impeccable table manners as we gorge ourselves, the judges take us out to a beautiful restaurant and judge our ability to make conversation, be a good host, and to eat interesting foods like snails, politely! The judging of social and etiquette skills are always such fun, and great entertainment.

Name a beauty queen that you had always admired and wish to emulate.

That’s a really great question, but for me almost impossible to answer. Each and every contestant in Miss World has done incredible, remarkable things for billions of people all over the world, with thousands of contestants since its inception in 1951, there are so many young women and their achievements which I admire.

How would you see yourself someday - a family-oriented wife or a career woman?

I’m confident that I can be both, I believe many things in life come down to establishing good balance, plus being Miss World Australia is so busy that it is helping me hone my time management and organizational skills! Soon I’ll be able to be everywhere at once!
