2006
pageant
in
September
WThe Miss World Organisation is delighted to announce that Poland will host the Miss World 2006 contest. This September, the most beautiful women from 120 countries will travel to the heart of Central Europe to compete in Miss World 2006, the longest-running and most prestigious festival to recognise the achievements of young women. Preparations are underway for a spectacular month-long tour of the cities, lakes and landmarks that make Poland a land so rich in heritage, culture and natural wonders. As ever, the highlight of the tour will be the 56th Miss World Final, to be staged in historic Warsaw on 30th September. Set in the heart of Europe, Poland is a diverse country where the capital and medieval towns nestle side by side with villages virtually unaltered by time. It is a modern, vibrant and progressive state, which maintains its traditional culture and natural beauty. Miss World – The Final is the World’s largest live annual TV event with global viewing figures topping two billion across more than 200 countries. With a record number of contestants anticipated to compete, Miss World 2006 will be the biggest event to take place in modern Poland – and comes with the seal of approval of event patron and Polish Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz. Miss World Organisation Chairman Mrs Julia Morley said: “Poland is a wonderful location for Miss World 2006. The people are tremendously warm hearted and they are rightly proud of their beautiful country. Poland is sure to welcome the contestants, who will take home many memories and wonderful experiences from their time here. We will showcase the wonders of Poland to the world.” During a recent visit to a frozen Warsaw, Miss World 2005 Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir was amazed at the unique architecture and the genuine warm hospitality of the Poles. She toured the city’s sites, including the Chopin Monument and the Old Town and enjoyed local cuisine at traditional Polish restaurants. She also took time to visit and spend time with sick children at the Oncology and Haematology Ward of the Independent Paediatric Clinical Hospital in Warsaw. "I am sure that the girls will love to explore and experience the many sites that Poland has to offer," she said. "With the snow at this time of year, it reminds me of my home in Iceland but I am definitely looking forward to coming back when it is warm and green." www.missworld.tv |

Iceland has won Miss World 2005
With a record number of contestants and an innovative new voting system, Miss World 2005 made television history tonight, as the public choose six new Miss World ambassadors and crowned the new Miss World 2005. Miss World Africa was named as Tanzania; Miss World Americas is Mexico; Miss World Asia Pacific is Korea; Miss World Caribbean is Puerto Rico; Miss World Northern Europe is Iceland, and Miss World Southern Europe is Italy. A unique panel of nine former Miss Worlds chaired by Miss World Chairman Julia Morley then chose Iceland as overall winner of the contest. "I am still in shock," the new Miss World 2005 said in an exclusive interview for the Miss World website. “I did not hear my name at first, I just heard it echo around the room. I only knew it was me because nobody else moved! Then it all came true “It is wonderful to know that so many people voted for me in the text vote and put me through to the top two in Northern Europe. I was pleased to win the title of Miss World Northern Europe. Then to win Miss World is incredible. I just feel wonderful. It came as a big shock but the feeling is incredible. I am numb.” Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir, 21, is a student of law from Reykavik, Iceland. While in China on a four-week tour with the other 101 Miss World contestants, Unnur has even found time to continue her studies. “I brought my law books with me and study in the evenings after dinner,’ she said. “My room mate Denmark is always laughing at me about it. Tonight she was one of the first to congratulate me. She was in tears because she was so happy for me. Unnur’s mother Unnur Steinsson represented Iceland in Miss World 1983 – the last time a UK girl won the title – and came in the top five. Now her daughter has gone that all important step further and taken the crown as Miss World 2005 – and her mother was in the crowd to wave her Icelandic flag with vigour. “My mum gave me some advice for how to behave and it seems to have worked. She told me to be myself, not be fake in any way, and to relax. I am so pleased that she was able to be here to see me win the title.” Days of preparations paid off as the contestants went through impressive dance routines with great ease in their gorgeous dresses in front of an anticipated global TV audience of more than two billion in 207 countries. The show had a strong Chinese flavour with two acts firmly rooted in China’s ancient culture; the first act involving traditional dances, while the second act brought to life the spirit of the peacock in a delicate ballet performance. This year’s two presenters, UK born Tim Vincent and China’s Angela Chow also received praise from the audience and the contestants for their professionalism and natural sensibility with the girls. Soul singing sensation Alexander O’Neal set the house on fire with two of his classic tracks, becoming an instant hit with the audience at Sanya’s Beauty Crown Theatre, China. Voting was intense in what is thought to be the World’s largest text vote. In a first this year, people in more than 200 countries were being invited to place votes for their favourite contestants in the finals of Miss World 2005. This set the contest on a roll, with each girl realising the importance of gaining support from the public. Contestants featured in one of six ‘Vote For Me’ TV specials where invited viewers to cast votes via an individual number for worldwide SMS voting or IVR. The shows gave an opportunity for each contestant to tell a little about themselves and canvas votes. Points were then awarded according to an effective formula which ensured that votes from all countries equated, regardless of the size of population, voting medium or overall number of votes. www.missworld.tv |

| Sanya Parade 12/11/05 “This is overwhelming, I have never seen so many excited people,” said Miss New Zealand Kay Anderson, as you rode the parade around the Miss World host city Sanya. For anyone who witnessed the spectacle of nearly half a million people turned out to welcome the Miss World contestants, the judgement of Miss New Zealand is easy to appreciate. Crowds ten deep lined the streets to cheer the contestants as they travelled the city in open-top jeeps and on highly decorated floats. Joining them on the route were dance groups, Chinese theatre troops, stilt walkers, musicians and schoolchildren. The parade also included stars of Asian film in town for the 14th Golden Rooster Chinese Film Festival – an event also attended by Miss World contestants later that same evening. The parade was set off by Miss World Chairman Julia Morley and local dignitaries including Mayor Zhang. As the parade wove its way around the streets of Sanya, firecrackers filled the air and people young and old ran to present the contestants with flowers and toys. “The incredible welcome we have received from so many people has made this a day we will never forget,’ said Miss Australia Dennae Brunow. “It is all rather unbelievable. I won my national contest seven weeks ago and now I am here alongside so many wonderful girls in China. The children were great, giving us presents and even asking for our autographs. I’m a girl from Albury and this has been the most unbelievable experience in my life.’ “Their welcome is important as it makes us feel at home in China - especially as this is my first trip overseas. I spoke to my mum last night and she is so proud of me being here. She and my dad are learning to send texts now so that she can vote for me!” |

Panel
of
Judges The first press conference has already been held for the 2005 pageant in China. This year, 2 delegates from each continental region will be selected by a judging panel, with three additional spots in the semi-finals reserved for the winners of (1) Miss World Talent, (2) Miss World's Beach Beauty and (3) Miss World's "Beauty With a Purpose". The Talent and Beach Beauty competitions were held in the previous two pageants, highlighting the delegates with the best performing arts talent and best overall styling and fitness in beachwear. "Beauty with a Purpose" seeks a delegate who has made extraordinary contribution to chosen cause(s). The Sport, Top Model and Delegates' Choice fast-tracks have been eliminated. With a vote-weighting system which allows each country in a region to have the same number of total points to allocate to any ten delegates in that region only, 2 semi-finalists who achieve the top number of votes through Telephone/SMS will be announced as semi-finalists for their respective continents. If a delegate has already won a fast-track or vice-versa, the next highest vote-reciepient will be named. Once the fifteen semi-finalists are in place, a judging panel at the Miss World Theater will deliberate to choose six continental queens (even though 1-3 regions will have more than 2 semi-finalists), and those six winners will be announced as the crowning moment nears. After making their final assessment, a new Miss World and runners-up will be named. This new system seeks to blend both public participation and the traditional judges' panel. The six regions are: America's, North Europe, South Europe, Africa, The Caribbean and Asian Pacific. JUDGES: MWO has announced that the final judging panel will consist of ten former Miss World's! This will include: Julia Kourotchkina (Russia, 1992), Azra Akin (Turkey, 2002), Lúcia Petterle (Brazil, 1971), Gina Thicke (USA, 1990), Denise Perrier (France, 1953), 2 former Miss World titleholders from India & Great Britain plus three others unknown.
