Business as usual?

Name the countries that made it to the Top 5 of Miss Universe for the last two years. Then have a look at the photos below. The first photo is that of two Trump sons meeting with Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up Shamcey Supsup and the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Janine Tugonon. The two Trumps are in Manila recently for the ground breaking ceremony of the Trump Tower in the city. The second photo is that of Oleksandra Nikolayenko with her husband Phil Ruffin together with Donald Trump.

Philippines assured of semifinals slot at Miss Universe?

Now, it would be childish to think that this has something to do with the results of Miss Universe. Right? But well, majority of Miss Universe fans and observers are anything but childish. It could be true that Miss Universe is about business but like any other major pageant, the organization is bound to ensure that the cash inflow trumps the cash outflow, ergo, a business. There is no way we can have a fabulous finals night if MUO exists just to lose money. That's a given.

No doubt, the photos could skew some opinions. This could lead some people to conclude that these are the best evidences to explain the placement of Ukraine and the Philippines at Miss Universe Top 5 in 2010 and 2011. Oleksandra's husband is a developer and he has the wavelength with Donald Trump while Oleksandra continues to nurture the Miss Ukraine pageant. Meanwhile, Donald is making inroads to the vibrant economy of the Philippines - arguably the home of the world's craziest beauty pageant fans. If Miss Universe is a business then it must be that the placement of Anna Poslavska, Venus Raj, Olesya Stefanko and Shamcey Supsup is all about business right?

Conspiracy theorists always miss the real point of course. Miss Universe is indeed a business but its business is to select the best, the most beautiful woman in the planet in a credible and fair manner. Without credibility and fairness, how can Miss Universe survive? How can Miss Universe go on if everyone thinks it is rigged? The way Miss Universe earns money is based on the interest of the general public. That is why credibility is far more important for the pageant than having deals with some developers or having a tower in some country.

But of course we can stick with conspiracy theories because it is more fun. And sourgraping too. Those who insinuate that Ukraine and the Philippines are both assured of semis slot because of these photos can strike a colorful conversation with Miss Pennsylvania USA Sheena Monnin.
