The Jenna Talackova issue ended not with a bang but with a whimper. The Miss Universe Canada pageant did allow the transsexual Jenna Talackova to compete but she was a clapper and as the curtains close and the last bow is served, all the hullabaloo came into naught. And if anyone thinks that the glass ceiling was cracked, think how long it took for a black man to dine in a desegregated lunch counters from the time his forebears were emancipated.
Donald Trump yielded to the demands of Gloria Allred. The name of feisty Gloria once came across in the movie Rat Race where Seth Green erroneously allowed an elderly woman to slip on a casino stairway. And guess who is the lawyer mentioned in the movie. Yes, that’s how the name Gloria Allred rings into the subconscious of American legal world. And Donald Trump knows he can’t win against Gloria in a court of law – not on this case. He settled instead in exchanging rather harmless barbs. It’s like Donald “emancipated” the transsexuals but he has clear instructions that they are not yet ready to eat in segregated lunch counters.

Sure transsexuals can participate at the national level of Miss Universe pageant but only to avoid legal backlash and negative publicity. After all United States is a country where opposition towards liberal agenda such as gay marriage will make you a prime target for negative media epithets. It is clear of course that there is no genuine willingness in part of the organization to recognize transsexuals are real women and having a transsexual contestant at Miss Universe will perhaps take a century more or two to happen.
All that tolerance talks in part of Miss Universe Australia and even Bb. Pilipinas is simply thrash. They will accept the application of transsexuals for the pageant but it is doubtful whether they will qualify one, let alone to crown one. Above all else, Australia does recognize the change of gender but not the Philippines. Thus, it is quite laughable on how idiotic is it for the Bb. Pilipinas Organization to announce that they will follow the directive of Trump to accept transsexuals. It is more likely to appease the highest echelon of Miss Universe Organization and nothing more.

The Jenna issue, which was first published by Missosology.Org, is such a joke for having created a media maelstrom. Missosology saw it as an interesting milestone of pageantry. Interestingly, Donald saw it in a business perspective. For him, it created a desirable media mileage and happy to see Miss Universe being talked about. But for many in the audience, the issue is personal. For transsexuals dreaming of having a normal life, it is about acceptance and tolerance. For conservatives, it could be the last straw of morality and decorum. Thus the discussion online is far spicier and far sharper than the barbs exchanged by Donald and Gloria (mainly centered on the genitalia of Donald). The American press, with voracious appetite for sensational story, simply obliged to the tune of the controversy.
Jenna Talackova did stir the pot or to some people opened the Pandora ’s Box. However, there are no black mambas coming out. It’s more like a harmless caterpillar. She made a joke out of herself, achieved nothing and changed nothing. The entire doomsday scenario for the beauty pageant world did not happened and it is unlikely to happen in the near future. The world of beauty pageants is still “closed minded” so don’t expect a deluge of transsexuals in the coming years. The fight of Jenna for equality is far from being called a fight. And she’s no Rosa Parks for the transgender people.
So what do you think about Jenna Talackova? Is she a purveyor of change or just a joke? Share what you think on facebook and missosology comment boxes.
