Is Carola IN or OUT?
It all started in 2001 when Ruth Ocumarez was able to woo a lot of hearts except of the judges. Dominican Republic, thanks to Ruth, penetrated the international attention. The very next year, Amelia Vega snatched the first ever Miss Universe crown for the Dominican Republic and things became great for the Caribbean nation. Renata Soñe, Marianne Cruz and Ada Aimee de la Cruz all made it to the Top 3 of Miss Universe in 2005, 2008 and 2009 respectively. It seems the country is heading for another crown!
But in reality, it is going to the opposite direction. What's going on Dominican Republic? In 2010, the country was represented by Eva Arias. She is a professional model but her built and aura are too strong, she failed to make it to the semis. In 2011, Dalia Fernandez was crowned Miss Dominican Republic but her victory was marred by allegations that she bought the crown for $100, 000. The allegation was not proven but the rumor in itself, is a clear cut indication that the public was not happy with the winner. And the public was right for not being happy for Dalia became a clapper.
Thanks to dinero?
And now here we are with the Miss Dominican Republic 2012 winner Carola Durán Baldera. What will she bring to Dominican Republic? Victory or another failed attempt to follow the footsteps of great Dominicanas at Miss Universe? This is yet to be known but it seems Dominican Republic is losing its style and opulence. Gone are the days when a Dominicana can turn heads. There is no doubt that there is an institutional problem within the Miss Universe Dominican Republic Organization, and whatever it is, it definitely ushered the failures of the country in 2010 and 2011. The key now is to find a solution before Dominican Republic sinks even deeper.
