Missosology.Org first reported that a transsexual Jenna Talackova was listed as one of the Miss Universe Canada 2012 official candidates and apparently, the organization did not know about the real status of Jenna. As the beauty pageant community became abuzz with the news, the Miss Universe Canada Organization suddenly pulled out their website online for few hours and returned back with Jenna missing from the list.
Then, the international media picked up the news days later and headlines began blaring the announcement of the Miss Universe Canada that Jenna was officially booted out from the contest. Today, April 2, the Miss Universe Organization released the following official statement:
NEW YORK, APRIL 2, 2012: “The Miss Universe Organization will allow Jenna Talackova to compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada pageant provided she meets the legal gender recognition requirements of Canada, and the standards established by other international competitions”.
Jenna did spark a fiery debate about sexuality and allowed the beauty pageant community to do some soul searching as to what is the definition of being a woman. The issue was very divisive with some quarters believe in equality while some believe in the traditional definition of being a woman. With her admittance back at the Miss Universe Canada pageant, surely, the beauty pageant world will never be the same again.
Are you in favor of the Miss Universe official statement? Why or why not?
