한국과 미스 유니버스의 이상한 관계

Korea - divided by political ideology with communist north and capitalist south. Technically still at war, Korea participates at beauty pageants in principle as a single nation. The south wants the world to know that Korea should be unified that is why the sash of South Korean delegates simply states Korea. But the north, communist as it is, don't give a damn about pageants.

한국 – 한국은 6.25 남북 전쟁으로 인하여 공산주의인 북쪽(북조선)과 민주주의인 남쪽(대한민국)으로 분단되었다. 한국은 미인대회에 한 나라의 이름으로서 출전하였다. 대한민국은 남과 북으로서가 아닌 하나의 나라로서 세상에 알려지기 원했기 때문에, 대한민국은 미스 사우스 코리아가 아닌 미스 코리아 로서 출범하게 되었다. 한편 북조선, 즉 공산주의자들은 미인대회에 전혀 관심이 없고 지역대회 조차 없다.

Korea had a great start at Miss Universe. Slowly rising from the ashes of the Korean War, Korean beauties made a five year straight placement from 1959 to 1963. In overall, Korea placed 8 times at the Miss Universe semis which makes that 1959-1963 placement as the golden years for the country. From then on, Korea began to place itself at the backwater of Miss Universe placements.

한국은 미스 유니버스에 보내기 시작한 초기시절에는 꽤 좋은 성적을 거두게 된다. 6.25 남북전쟁이 지나고 나서 얼마 안 되어서 1959년부터 1963년까지 5명의 미스 코리아가 결승진출을 하게 된다. 한국은 총 8번의 결승진출을 하였는데 1959년부터 1963년은 가장 성적이 좋았던 전성기라고 여겨진다. 그 이후 한국은 점점 미스 유니버스의 결승진출을 하기가 어려워지기 시작했다.

In 1980 though, Korea hosted the pageant. This allowed the local girl Kim Eun-jong to be called as one of the semifinalists. In 1988, Korea surprisingly made it to the semis and landed at the highest placement for a Korean at the pageant. Chang Yoon-jung luckily participated in what was called as the Year of East Asians and placed first runner-runner up to Miss Thailand Porntip Nakhirunkanok.

1980년에 한국은 미스 유니버스 1980을 유치하였다. 미스 코리아 1980인 김은정이 준준결승에 진출하였다. 1988년에는 미스 코리아 장윤정이 미스 유니버스 대회 역사상 최고의 등수인 2위를 기록 하게 된다. 1988년에든 동아시아의 4명이 Top 5 안에 들게 되었고, 한국은 2위가 되었다. 우승자는 미스 타일랜드 유니버스 1988 폰팁 나키룬카녹이었다.

In 2007, many thought Honey Lee will eventually become the winner

2007년에, 많은 사람들이 이하늬가 진짜 우승감이라고 여겼다.

It took almost two decades to have another Korean joining the semis and this time, many thought Miss Korea 2007 Honey Lee will eventually snatch the country's first ever Miss Universe victory. Alas, with an interpreter that botched the soul of her answer, Honey Lee settled for third runner-up. Miss Japan Riyo Mori won the pageant.

It seems Honey Lee was the only one that can redeem Korea from the depths of stupor. No other Korean delegate have come so close to victory since the first runner-up finish in 1988. Since 2007, Korea underwent a series of missteps.

In 2008, Korea followed a misguided concept that somehow, anyone trained by the legendary National Director Ines Ligron would end up in the Miss Universe semifinals. Sun Lee, Korea's representative to Miss Universe 2008, was dressed with "shock and awe" gowns, coached to have a bubbly personality, and a special National Costume that is definitely outside the box was designed for her.

근 20년 이후에 또 다른 미스 코리아가 결승진출을 하였고, 많은 사람들은 미스 코리아 2007인 이하늬가 미스 유니버스 2007의 왕관을 거머 쥘 것이라고 예상하였다. 통역가는 최종질문에서 이하늬의 대답을 틀리게 통역하는 바람에, 4위에 머물렀고, 1위는 미스 유니버스 재팬인 모리 리요가 차지하였다.

오랜 기간 동안 미스 코리아가 국제 미인대회에서 실패 하여서 아무도 별다른 기대를 갖고 있지 않았던 가운데, 이하늬는 한국의 위상을 다시 일으켜질 인물처럼 여겨졌다. 1988년에 2위를 차지하여서 굉장히 근사한 차이로 우승에 실패 하였고, 2007년 이후에는 더 큰 실패들을 맛보게 된다.

2008년에 한국은 실패를 계속 거듭하게 되는데, 이지선은 일본의 전설적인 내셔널 디렉터인 이네스 리그론의 트레이닝으로 준준결승 이상을 노리고 있었다. 이지선은 미스 유니버스 2008의 한국 대표로 출전 하였고, 충격적인 디자인의 드레스를 입고 경쟁을 펼쳤다. 전통의상은 굉장히 틀에 벗어난 것이었다.

The result was a disaster. The black gown of Sun Lee was like a huge drab trenchcoat and because of its black color and fabric appears heavy. Furthermore, instead of having a bubbly personality, she appeared to be a bimbo. She waves and smiles and appear to engage with the media but she doesn't have much to say except for looking cute in front of the cameras. Her Korean warrior costume was definitely outside the box because what is "in the box" for Korean National Costume is the usual hanbok. Anyway, Sun Lee was hyped but failed to make it to the semis.

The case of Sun Lee speaks in volumes how Korea want to win the Miss Universe crown but definitely is unsure what approach must be taken. The campaign for 2009, 2010 and 2011 was also a failure. In 2010, Korea was quite optimistic with Kim Joo-ri for she was hailed as Continental Queen of Asia at Miss World 2009. But the stiff competition narrowed her chances.

The strange relationship of Korea and Miss Universe is inexplicable. Perhaps Korea needs to experiment with what works in the pageant well in terms of gown and styling of its delegates. Japan for example, and now China, found ways to arrest their Miss Universe drought. If anything, Korea can perhaps take comfort that the country's national costume, the hanbok, is well received at the pageant. This costume with several variations of course, won the Best in National Costume award for four instances at Miss Universe - 1974, 1977, 1983 and 2001.

결과는 재앙과도 같은 수준이었다. 검은 드레스를 입은 이지선의 모습은 큰 트렌치코트 같이 보였고, 검은 색상은 재질로 하여금 무거워 보이게 만들었다. 그에 반해 즐거운 성격을 보이는 모습은 이상하게 여겨졌다. 이지선의 웨이브와 미소는 언론의 관심을 끌었으나, 카메라 앞에 선 귀여운 모습 외에는 별 다른 언급이 없었다. 이지선의 전사 이미지의 전통의상은 변칙적이었고, 이는 전통적인 전통의상이 아니었다. 어쨌든 이지선은 사람들의 뇌리 속에 잘 남는 듯 하였으나, 준준결승 진출에 실패 하였다.

이지선은 어떻게 해야 미스 유니버스에서 미스 코리아가 왕관을 차지 할 수 있겠는가에 대해 주장을 펼치기 시작하였으나, 이 주장은 충분히 반영 되었는지 알 수가 없다. 2009, 2010 그리고 2011년 역시 실패 하였다. 2010년에 미스 코리아 김주리는 미스 월드 2009 대회에서 ‘컨티넨탈 퀸 오브 아시아 2009’ 상을 수상 하였으나, 여전히 우승하지는 못 하였다.

미스 유니버스 대회와 미스 코리아의 이상한 관계는 설명하기 힘들다. 아마도 한국은 드레스와 전체적인 스타일에 대한 연구가 필요해 보인다. 예를 들자면 일본의 경우이고, 이제는 중국의 경우이다. 우승에 대한 갈증을 해결 하기 위해서는 반드시 그렇게 해야 한다. 아마도 전통의상도 다양한 디자인으로 밀고 나간다면 좋지 않을까하는 생각이 든다. 한국은 미스 유니버스 대회에서 전통의상상을 4번 차지 하였는데, 1974, 1977, 1983, 2001년에 수상하였다.

This year, Korea will once again participate at Miss Universe and their delegate is 22 year old Sung-hye Lee. Not much is expected from her but what can be done to increase her chances? Will the Miss Korea Organization allow its delegate to become a protégée of foreign trainer like in 2008? Or perhaps send their delegate to United States and try westernize her looks and stylings like what China did. Whatever course of action that Korea must take, it must take note that Honey Lee's placement is a direct result of her own merits. In many cases, it all boils down to the girl that a country is sending to Miss Universe contest.

22살의 미스 코리아 2011 이성혜는 미스 유니버스 2012에 출전 하게 된다. 많은 사람들이 이성혜에 대한 기대감을 그다지 갖고 있지 않으나, 어떻게 하면 이성혜가 기회를 잡기가 쉬워 질까? 2008년처럼 미스 코리아 조직회(한국일보)가 외국인 트레이너를 고용하게 될것인가? 아니면 그 들의 중국의 내셔널 디렉터인 유 사이 칸처럼 미스 차이나 유니버스 우승자를 미국에서 트레이닝을 시켜 외모와 스타일링을 서양인의 입맛에 맞추는 것이 좋을것인가? 어찌됐든 한국은 그런 과정을 충분히 거쳐야지 살 길이다. 이하늬의 결승진출은 이하늬 특유의 매력이 있었기 때문에 가능했었을 뿐이다. 많은 선례와 같이, 이 상태로 미스 유니버스 대회에 출전 시킨다면 무리라고 생각이 들고, 미스 코리아 대회에서는 착한 한국 여성의 이미지만을 내세우는 것이 문제가 되고 있다. 미스 코리아 조직회가 미스 코리아가 다양하면서도 당당하고 멋진 여성상을 추구 할 것 (예를 들어 모델과 같이 섹시하면서도 인상이 강한것. 남미와 같은 나라에서는 이런 점을 중요시 한다.)을 강조하지 않는다면 다른 미스 유니버스 참가국에게 계속 기회를 내줄 것이고 미스 유니버스에서의 성적은 앞으로도 계속 물거품일 것이다.
