ミス・ユニバース大会：日本の光と影

1959 – Akiko Kojima won Asia’s first ever Miss Universe crown. Prior to her victory, Japan placed second runner-up in 1953 (Kinuko Ito), fourth runner-up in 1955 (Keiko Takahasi), semifinalist in 1957 (Kyoko Otani) and 1958 (Tomoko Moritake). Akiko was the lone Japanese to win the crown for almost five decades.

1959年―児島明子さんは日本人で、有色人種 として初めての『ミス・ユニバース』となる。1953年には伊東絹子さんが３位を獲得；1955年には、高橋敬緯子さんが５位を獲得。1957年には大谷享子さんが入賞；1958年には、森武知子さんも入賞。約50年の間に児島さんは、ミス・ユニバースでただ一人日本人として優勝を果たした。

1970 – Jun Shimada’s 3rd runner-up finish in Miami Beach is the highest placement of Japan since Akiko. During the competition, she was also judged as Best in Swimsuit. She also revolutionized the short hairstyle, which was very rare for a beauty pageant contestant at that time. Japan was enjoying a golden era with a 4th runner-up finish a year earlier (Kikuyo Osuka). From 1969-1973, Japan was consistent in making it to the Miss Universe semis.

1970年―島田純さんはミス・ユニバース日本代表となり、アメリカのマイアミビーチで開催されたミス・ユニバース大会に出場した。同大会ではセミファイナルに進出、総合第4位を獲得したほか、「ベスト水着賞」にも選ばれた。島田さんはショートヘアで大会に出場したが、これは当時のミスコンテスト出場者としては世界的にも珍しいことであった。前年度、1969年の大会では、 大須賀喜久代さんも入賞し、総合第５位となる。1969年～73年までに５年連続で入賞を果たした。これは日本代表が最も輝いた時代だと言っても過言ではないでしょう。

1975 – Sachiko Nakayama’s semifinals finish in San Salvador, El Salvador marked the end of the Japanese golden era. Japan has to wait for 13 years.

1975年に中山幸子さんはエルサルバドルの首都、サンサルバドルで行われたミス・ユニバース世界大会に日本代表として出場した。セミファイナルに進出した中山さんは、「トップ12」を獲得した。それから黄金時代が終わり、13年間日本代表は一度の入賞すら果たすことが出来なかった。

1988 – Mizuho Sakaguchi、the winner of the Kinki Block Finals for Miss Universe Japan, broke the lull by placing as 3rd runner-up where four out of the top five are East Asians. The pageant was held in Taipei, Taiwan.　This is Japan’s only placement in the 1980’s.

1988年　－　坂口美津穂さんはミス・ユニバース日本大会近畿地区代表を経て優勝して、ミス・ユニバース日本代表、および同年の「ミス・ジャパン」となった。続いて同年5月に台湾で行われたミス・ユニバース世界大会に日本代表として出場、総合第４位となった。同年の大会ではTop 5のうち４人が東洋人であった。これは、ミス・ユニバース日本代表の、1980年代における唯一の入賞例である。

1998 – Ines Ligron became the national director and stopped the long drought that Japan experienced in the Miss Universe Pageant.

1998年　－　イネス・リグロン。フランス人で、ミス・ユニバース・ジャパンのナショナル・ディレクターに就任。

2003 - Miyako Miyazaki placed as 4th runner-up in Panama City. It is the first time that a Japanese beauty queen made it to the semifinals for almost 1 and a half decade! Ines, “shock and awe” fashion statement created quite a stir especially this revolutionary gown of Miyako.

2003年　－　宮崎京さんは「ミス・ユニバース・ジャパン」となり、同年にパナマの首都パナマシティで開催されたミス・ユニバース世界大会に日本代表として出場した。同大会では、日本人として15年ぶりに入賞（5位）した。イネスさんは「ショックと驚き」ファッション作戦を明らかにした。特に、宮崎さんが世界大会で使ったイヴニングガウンはすごく話題となった。

2005 – With the exclusion of its contestant in 2004 at the semis, Ines upped the ante of her shock and awe approach. This gown of Yukari Kuzuya created a lot of buzz but the judges didn’t buy it.

2005年　－　2004年代表の失敗を生かして、「ショックと驚き」作戦をさらに進化させようとするイネスさんは2005年の代表、葛谷 由香里さんにこれを当てはめた。しかし、このイヴニングガウンは、審査員に評価されなかった。

2006 – Kurara Chibana should have been Japan’s second Miss Universe but fell one shot short. The shock and awe approach of Ines is evident on Kurara’s National Costume.

2006年　－　知花くららさんはアメリカ・ロサンゼルスで開催されたミス・ユニバース世界大会の日本代表として準優勝を獲得した。ナショナルコスチューム（民族衣装）審査では、戦国武将の甲冑をアレンジした衣装を披露し、見事、ベストナショナルコスチュームを受賞した。

2007- Japan wins its second Miss Universe crown thanks to Riyo Mori. Japan of course celebrated.

2007年　－　森理世さんはメキシコシティで行われた世界大会に出場して、見事優勝し、日本人として2人目の「ミス・ユニバース」となる。

2008 – Ines Ligron became a sort of icon in Japan for reviving the declining performance of Japan in Miss Universe. Hiroko Mima continued the momentum by placing in the semis. The shock and awe concept continued this time, Hiroko brought a bag with her during the gown prelims.

2008年　－　イネス・リグロンさんは世界大会での不振が続いていた日本代表を指導し、日本代表を５回もTop15に導いたことを知られた。2008年の代表、 美馬寛子さんはイネスさんにとって５人目の入賞者であった。大会のイヴニングガウンの審査の時に、バッグを持ち、再び審査員を驚かせた。

2009 – Emiri Miyazaka continued to awe the foreign observers but shocked the locals with this lingerie-revealing National Costume. Negative criticisms fumed Ines. Emiri failed to make it to the semis thanks to the tanned skin gone bad.

2009年　－　宮坂絵美里は日本代表となって、外国人のファンたちに高い評価を得たが、誤解を招くナショナルコスチュームが原因で日本人にショックを与え、波紋を呼んだ。それから、イネスさんはメディアでも多く取り上げられ、バッシングを受け続けた。絵美里さんは、日焼けのし過ぎだと言われ、入賞を果たすことができなかった。

2010 – Ines quits. Maiko Itai was a clapper. Japan is on a slow yet steady decline yet again at Miss Universe.

2010年　－イネスさんはナショナルディレクターの座を降りた。公務員の 板井麻衣子さんは、日本代表となったが、世界大会で活躍することが出来なかった。

2011 – Maria Kamiyama cemented the idea that Japan is indeed on decline. She was clapper

2011年　－　神山まりあさんは、入賞出来ず、日本の光は少しずつ消えていく。
