The Latest Buzz on Miss Universe 2007

May 31

This year, Missosology.Org failed to break its last year’s record. There is no doubt that millions of visitors visited us during the season especially on the finals night but we received far more on the same period last year. Last year’s performance was by far the best for any fan-based pageant-related website. Even our competition which claims to be number 1 wasn’t able to surpass our last year’s record and we have the Alexa.com’s graph to prove our claim. In blue is Missosology.Org’s daily reach over a one year period while brown is that of the competition.

So, Miss Japan Riyo Mori won and this is a welcoming news indeed! It’s been 48 long years since Japan won the title. There are already four Asian countries with two Miss Universe crowns – Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and India.

Anyway, Riyo charmed the judges with her exuberant catwalk skills and confidence. Her answer to the final question was also top-notch. Absolutely a well-deserved win.

Doukissa Nomikou, Miss Greece 2007, (left, photo ho/Miss Universe L.P. LLP) competes in her BSC Swimwear Thailand swimsuit and Nina Shoes during the 2007 Miss Universe Presentation Show at Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. Delegates competed in swimsuit and gown segments in a full packed convention center.

Well applaused delegates include Misses Mexico, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Spain. Results of the competition will determine on who will be in the semifinals lists.

Other delegates who made good impression upon us are Miss Japan, Korea, Puerto Rico and USA.

So who nailed preliminary interviews? It is of course difficult to tell as the event is closed door. It is also up to the judges and each of them has a perception on how good the answers each delegate gave.

Although not quite scientific, we can infer from the interview video posted at the Miss Universe official website or rely on the buzz within Mexico City! Remember last year’s Miss Universe Zuleyka Rivera did not fare well in her interview video. To have an even better picture, last year’s Miss Hungary’s interview was below average but managed to make it to top fifteen!

Anyway, this year, the following was reportedly fared well in the interview – USA, Mexico, New Zealand, the Philippines, Korea and Australia.

Not quite a sari

A web visitor from New Delhi has e-mailed us that Miss India Puja Gupta (photo Miss Universe LP LLP) is actually not wearing a sari but a lehanga. We cannot pretend that we are expert in Indian fashion but for us it is difficult to spot the difference. Our commentators however wishes to express the fact that costumes from India at Miss Universe and even at Miss Earth and Miss International has failed to show significant varieties. This is quite perplexing for a country with huge diversity. Until now we are still at loss on what sets a lehanga apart from a sari.

Hot pick page to launch soon!

We have to admit that it's difficult to keep up with the pace of events in Mexico but don't worry new pages will soon be available at the website. Tomorrow, a Hot Pick will be published and to give you a preview, Miss Argentina Daniela Stucan will grace the page. Largely overlooked, Daniela is the most experienced among the ladies having participated in various major beauty pageants. We feel that she has a big chance to make it at the top 15 and we are keeping a close watch.

A feast of colors drew an enormous crowd at Mexico City!

Vive la France! Miss France 2007 Rachel Legrain-Trapani (left) poses for photographers during the runway with

traditional dresses at the Reforma Avenue in Mexico City. AFP/Alfredo Estrella. Miss France costume however is not one of our favorites! We love Miss South Africa's intricate designs in fabric. Plus the way she carried a tradition-inspired wardrobe is very sexy!

Miss Mexico's very controversial costume was ditched and instead of bullets and war, the skirt featured crops and bountiful harvest. The new costume is our favorite too!

Miss Philippines' mardi-gras theme infused with traditional garb is also beautiful!

This year's costume feature the usual sari for Miss India and marks a comeback of kimono from Miss Japan (a far cry from last year's samurai garb). Miss USA is Elvis while Miss Paraguay opt for a skimpy outfit.

All for the Mexican Red Cross.

Anna Theresa Licaros, Miss Philippines 2007, displays her gift at the 2007 Miss Universe National Gift Auction at Arroyo Restaurant in Mexico City. Can anyone guess what she brought at the auction? Miss Israel brought a candle holder, Miss Estonia a framed map of her country while Miss Kazakhstan a traditional Kazakh shield. ho/Miss Universe L.P., LLLP.

It's now a dry-run test! The delegates were up and running the entire day doing rehearsals.

The African Beat.

We are not too sure about our opinions when the issue about Miss Tanzania Flaviana Matata pops up. The truth is, she drew mixed reactions in Mexico as well but one thing is for sure and that she is an attention grabber. Her shaved head is both a plus and a minus depending on who's to judge. On the other hand, Flaviana has a body to behold and she's absolutely charming. If she's in the semis, we won't be surprised! ho/Miss Universe L.P., LLLP.

In the recent rehearsals, Miss Ukraine looks wonderful but needless to say, there are more and more delegates that are shining through. Miss South Africa seems to be poised to win. Mexico is getting lots of attention and although this is understandable, she is under pressure to be competetive.

Whoever started the rumor, we are not too sure but we received a lot of e-mails saying that there is a very strong possibility that the eventual winner will be a blonde! Think South Africa, Estonia, Serbia....

The delegates visited the beautiful canals of Xochimilco - a tourist attraction atop an ancient lake. The name Xochimilco is an Aztec phrase meaning Garden of Flowers and this was the agricultural center of the ancient city of Tenochtitlán!

The Hispanic Flavor.

Miss Spain Natalia Zabala Arroyo and Miss Venezuela Ly Jonaitis pose at the Xochimilco Canals in Mexico City, Mexico. Natalia has been a favorite of the many and she definitely showed class and confidence. Meanwhile, seemingly oblivious to our political analysis, Ly is actually a strong contender! Whether politics will seep in through the finals night is something that we have to watch out for! ho/Miss Universe L.P., LLLP.

We have observed some reactions of the people visiting our forum with regards to the alleged story of Ines Ligron - Miss Japan Universe pageant director. The story was thought to be sourced from Ines' blog and we think - if ever it was true - it is quite nasty. One thing is for sure though: being reckless will leave you look pathetic.

Reviewing the 1993 pageant (the last time Miss Universe was held in Mexico), the then Miss Venezuela proudly announced the democratic ways of her country in the final question. Surely, with the recent closure of one of the trusted TV networks in her country, the current Miss Venezuela can't drum the same beat.

Here's some few things that might not happen this year: boos for Miss USA, extra-loud chants and cheers for Miss Puerto Rico, no Miss Mexico in the semis and no too large a crown for the eventual winner. (And if you didn't know it, they all happend in 1993!)

Hot Picks!

Many people gave their reaction when we placed Miss Ukraine as our top hot pick in May 8! Really, with the photo in the right, ho/Miss Universe L.P., LLLP it's an easy choice! However, our recent Hot Picks choice shows this lovely lass in 7th place signifying that things can drastically change!

Miss India was reportedly underrated and could surprise us all! Miss Greece is also a strong contender along with Miss Japan. Watch out for Misses Slovenia, the Philippines and Spain. All of these women are currently not in our Hot Picks but they are certainly in a competetive stance!

Check out our website updates! We will - in the coming days - open up our index for the Miss Universe 2007 plus daily updates on this section and the remainder of our predictions!
