Analyzing Miss Universe 2014
By Ric Galvez

The 63rd Annual MISS UNIVERSE Pageant

The 63rd Miss Universe beauty pageant ended in a rather sour note, as majority of the fans are not really happy how things turned out. What is funny is that the whole hullabaloo is not really about who won. What people had been griping about are some things that would not even change the most important outcome of all – that Colombia won its second Miss Universe crown and it took a Paulina Vega to win it.

Paulina Vega has been a front-runner ever since the competition started, no question about that. But like in any other competition, the field was wide open as it is not over until it is over. The Top 15 had some surprises in it but in overall, it was what most pageant analysts/missosologists had been expecting. Missosology, like most major beauty pageant websites, had correctly predicted Colombia’s victory. In overall, the final predictions of Missosology netted 11 out of 15 semifinalists. Those that were included in the list but failed to make the cut are Dominican Republic, Mexico, Costa Rica and the Czech Republic. They were replaced by Italy, France, the Netherlands and Australia although Australia was ranked 19th in our list.

Miss India Noyonita Lodh, Miss Italy Valentina Bonariva and Miss Colombia Paulina Vega are announced as three of the top fifteen finalists

When the Top 15 was announced, Miss Colombia Paulina Vega was the first to be called and she strutted onstage showing genuine surprise. Unfortunately, Miss Universe has changed its format which has been running for more than a decade. New crown, new era, new format…but not for the better. The new 3-hour marathon broadcast is perhaps meant to put brakes on what it seems like gone in a flash competition. I had been watching Miss Universe for years and the previous editions had left me wanting more, asking at the end, “Was that all?” While the new and lengthy format may give me some satisfaction, it however destroyed the excitement that the announcement of semifinalists brings. As each semifinalist was called, a small video clip was shown about her before another semifinalist was announced. This is not the Miss Universe that I have grown accustomed with but we will all probably all get used to it.

In my personal list of Top 10, published in these pages post-prelims, I have put Colombia on the top convinced that Paulina Vega will make history. On that list, six made it the Top 15 and all of them made it to the Top 10. Miss Italy Valentina Bonariva came out from nowhere to defeat top favorites such as Miss Costa Rica Karina Ramos, Miss Serbia Andjelka Tomašević and most especially Miss Mexico Josselyn Garciglia. But here are some interesting facts – when BSC Thailand Swimwear sponsored Miss Universe, it was one of the great years of Thailand in recent memory at the competition and when Kooey Australia also sponsored, Australia had its own fun. I came to think that the non-placement of Miss Australia last year was somehow affected by the withdrawal of sponsorship not only of Kooey but also of Australian Gold – a sunblock lotion company. Yamamay, an Italian brand, is probably flexing its muscles that could explain the inclusion of Miss Italy. Meanwhile, the crown maker DIC from Czech Republic is probably not an influence yet in the same way that Mikimoto had on the Japanese delegates a few years back.

Now, you might ask if I am insinuating that sponsorship has that influence on the outcome of the pageant. Well, if you still don’t know on where I am going to after reading this far, then you are enjoying the blissfulness of ignorance. Missosology was founded on the premise that politics has huge influence on all Big4 pageants and that includes on which country a sponsor came from. Any pageant enthusiast should know that by now. So it will not be a surprise for us all when we will soon see a good run for Czech Republic and Italy at the pageant.

The swimsuit competition had a huge Latin flavor in it but that’s just apropos since the pageant is being held the Little Venezuela of America. Miss Colombia Paulina Vega came out just divine with the right body proportions that told us all that she should be the new Miss Universe. Then out came Miss Italy Valentina Bonariva with a good body structure but I can list at least 20 women who could match her figure. I also found her walk amateurish but she did pull a decent performance. Miss France Camille Cerf sported a top-notch body figure but she lacked presentation skills. This is where most of the French girls fail. They have great bodies but they are ill-trained for presentation and while their National Director was pretty vocal about her discontentment of the results, she should first run a diagnostic test of her methodology in training her girls. I wonder what is French for pasarella?

Miss India Noyonita Lodh was small in stature but big at heart. I am thankful that she read the article of a fan published by Missosology spelling out quite clearly – and brutally – the need for her to be classy. So there she was, gliding onstage with confidence and class instead of dancing like what she did at the Yamamay pool event and what Shilpa Singh did in 2012. I am a great fan of her beauty but her body structure was simply drowned by more statuesque and taller beauties.

Miss USA Nia Sanchez did great and so did Miss Indonesia Elvira Devinamira. Elvira was just oozing with elegance and her walk vastly improved. Miss Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos meanwhile sported an unconventional body structure and people really called her fat (she was not fat). But one can see that she struggled with her weight as her abs and arms appeared to be swelling but Migbelis had a great stage presence and catwalk skills which could have been her saving grace. Miss Spain Desirée Cordero was statuesque and clearly a frontrunner but personally I hate her tattoo. I personally think that such tattoo cheapened her image. Miss Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa also looked perfect with her shapely waist. She also opted for a subtler catwalk instead of what she had shown during the prelims and it worked great for her.

Miss Argentina Valentina Ferrer was all about legs, legs and more legs while Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennel was just elegant, queenly and very sexy. Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha also made her mark in the swimsuit competition with her leggy body structure. Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen was okay-ish with a well endowed breast which undeniably caught a lot of attention. Miss Brazil Melissa Gurgel had a time of her life and I like her presentation but she fell short in convincing me – and the judges – that she was a top 10 material.

The last to be called in the swimsuit competition was Miss Australia Tegan Martin and she came out gorgeous and very much like a super model. Together with Miss Argentina, Tegan can easily be one of the Victoria’s Secret models as their bodies are simply perfect for a lingerie advertisement. Last year, Tegan was castigated by fans for sporting a rather unflattering body as shown in one of her photos that were widely circulated in the social media. But she looked fabulous at the Miss Universe competition and I think she really worked hard to achieve a great body.

The contest moved on and it was then the time to cut the number of competing beauties. The five delegates that failed to progress further were Brazil, Indonesia, India, France and Italy. I am amused that Venezuela progressed to the next round. I would gladly replace her with France or Indonesia but I guess her sash still carry a lot of weight – pun or no pun intended.

At the Top 10, the gown segment was opened by Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennel. I was awed by her dress. That red figure-hugging gown that completely exposed her back certainly did enhance the beauty of Kaci. Her short hair plus her decision not to smile till the last pose added an enigma to her aura. She came off as full of class and elegance!

Miss Colombia Paulina Vega came out next and she looked just like a royalty. I like that generous neckline as it adds a sexy twist into a rather elegant gown. It also gave her body shape more exposure and Jeannie Mai correctly said that it made Paulina look 8-feet tall.

With a classy turn, Miss Ukraine Diana Harsova looked stunning in her red Zuhair Murad gown. I found the gown rather risky as not so many people would like it but the generous opening at the front plus the great catwalk skills of Valentina became a winning combination.

Miss Argentina Valentina Ferrer was described by Jeannie Mai as “like a glass of champagne” and correct me if I am wrong but that was the first time I heard Jeannie saying that. What prompted Jeannie to say that perhaps was the color of Valentina’s gown plus that sexy transparent lower portion of the gown that reveals Valentina’s best asset – her legs.

Miss Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos competes in an evening gown of her choice as one of the top ten finalists

Then came the most horrible gown of them all! Miss Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa donned in what appears to be the cheapest gown of the night. The white gown looked like a piece of rag or perhaps a kitchen doormat after we’ve seen a series of classy and expensive-looking dresses in the competition. While Mary Jean walked with that élan and sophistication, not even Manny Pacquiao and last minute tweaks of the gown could save her.

Miss Spain Desirée Cordero looked elegant as if she was the princess of the night. The strapless gown clearly showed off her body figure and she looked statuesque.

Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen was just lovely. Some people were complaining about her walk but I don’t see anything wrong with it. The pleated yellow gown was made to highlight her bosom (I guess) and it did not fail. The v-cut neck line and high-positioned waist worked on her like magic.

With a sassy turn, Miss Venezuela Migbelis Castellanos made her presence felt thanks to the overwhelming presence of the Venezuelans in the audience. However her Gionni Straccia gown made her look wider and a little bit plump.

The gown segment was capped by a series of two expensive looking dresses. Both were mermaid cuts, one blue and one red. Miss Australia Tegan Martin looked fabulous in a blue-violet gown with busy skirt. The dress followed the en vogue plunging neckline and it fitted Tegan well. However, I found her presentation lack-luster and she appeared to be in a rush onstage. This was in opposition to what Miss USA Nia Sanchez did. With her shimmering red gown, Nia took her time and came off as classy and fresh.

The Top 5 was not something that I expected. I thought Spain would be there. I had some doubts with the Philippines but I saw how its previous candidates clinching the Top 5 for four years in a row. So my Top 5 included Jamaica, Colombia, USA, Spain and the Philippines. The judges however saw it differently. They picked USA, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Jamaica and Colombia.

Like in the Top 15 announcement, each candidate that was called in the Top 5 was featured in a video clip. While it does give the audience a better understanding of the contestants, the format unnecessarily dampens the excitement. The Top 5 was okay but it did shake up the previous trends. Brazil, the Philippines and Venezuela – the only three nations that has won all the Big4 crowns – were left out after two years of being in the Top 5 at Miss Universe.

Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell answers her final question
Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell answers her final question

For the first time, the Miss Universe Top 5 interview had two segments. The first round of questions came from the judges and the second was the common question that was picked up from the comments posted on the Miss Universe Facebook page. I am not so sure what really happened but that was the worst Top 5 Q&A I have ever seen at Miss Universe. Most of the candidates had to ask the judges to repeat their questions. Miss USA Nia Sanchez repeated Manny Pacquiao’s question not because she did not understand it but it appeared to me that she wanted to buy time. Her answer about what she would tell the terrorists within 30 seconds echoed the very answer that the film Miss Congeniality used to cheapen the image of pageantry – world peace. Not one single answer in the Top 5 reached my quotable quote level.

After the Q&A, I thought Jamaica and Colombia would be the last two standing delegates. Much to the dismay of the audience, Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennel settled for a fourth runner-up finish. I think it was huge injustice and the live audience gave out very loud boos. One rumor has it that Miss Russia Yulia Alipova began shouting onstage. Meanwhile, a confirmed rumor circulated on how some of the delegates began cheering for Kaci instead of Paulina after the coronation. I personally think that Kaci should have been ranked higher but not necessarily the overall winner. After the Q&A, I knew Miss Colombia had sealed the deal. One should remember that the final judging scores of Miss Universe do not only rely on the Q&A but rather on what the judges have seen in the entire night. There was no denying that Miss Colombia Paulina Vega had been leading the pack throughout the evening.

The 63rd Annual MISS UNIVERSE Pageant
Miss Colombia Paulina Vega, Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell, Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha, and Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen wait to answer their final question as one of the top five finalists

Colombia has finally won its second Miss Universe crown. Pageant analysts thought they would never see another Colombian Miss Universe after the heartbreaks of 1992, 1993, 1994 and 2008 pageants. Those were the years when people thought Colombia would win but the country simply settled for first runner-up positions. Paulina came into the competition with so many rumors and nasty comments. First was that news report that she was emotionally unprepared for the pageant and that she allegedly decided to back-out. Second was the her alleged bad attitude. As it turned out, all of these rumors are false.

With the new DIC crown on her head, Paulina became sensational news in her country. Will a postage stamp be issued in her honor? Will she be declared tax free for life? Most probably she will as well as several other privileges and that superstar stature just like what the first ever Miss Universe from Colombia – Luz Marina Zuluaga – had enjoyed. Indeed, the long wait for Colombia is finally over and this could usher the country into its Miss Universe golden age. It will be once again a threat at the pageant and the rest of the world should better watch out. Colombia is back in the game and it will cement its status as one of the leading countries in the beauty pageant ranking. Viva Colombia!

  1. Love your analysis! I agree with what the author wrote on the influence of the sponsors on the result of Miss Universe. And I wonder about why Jamaica failed to place higher. CHI has been the main sponsor for Miss Universe for years, and they have a lot of products for making different hairstyles. If Miss Jamaica won, it would be a nightmare to that company. So, maybe when the top 5 was announced, CHI agents rushed to judges or even blackmailed Paula Shugart to prevent the short-haired girl from winning (just my imagination). But maybe because Jamaica did not smile much during the presentations, this might have lowered her scores?

Anyway, I think Colombia deserves the crown and she answered well, but not excelently. I wish Miss Ukraine could have made a more powerful speech when she talked about the conflict in her country. Honestly, USA was a sweet girl but top 5 spot was too much for her. When the results were announced, I thought “ok, anyone could win, but please not USA”. They got 8 crowns already, and too much favoritism.

    • No worries that lil’ island in the Caribbean will carry home that the crown one day….as with her neighbours , Trinidad, Dominican Rep and Peurto Rico.

  2. Beautiful. You are so right. Love to read you. Mot surprise Colombia eill host MissUniverse soon and it will be the best pageant ever!!! Bcs Colombian like philippines love beauty contest! Thanks.

  3. I completely disagree with your analysis regarding sponsorship gaining an edge for some of the candidates. Japan during that time were really great because of Ines and not just due to the Mikimoto crown. Italy was great during the preliminaries. Her inclusion was not a surprise nor was it because of Yamamay. Coz if that is the case, then why was Italy snubbed last year? The same is true for DIC and Czech Republic. Australia has been sending great candidates and its terribly unfair to say that their excellent performance was due to sponsorship. Such claims which has no basis are uncalled for and just mere gossip.

    • You’re absolutely right. Back in 90’s, when India was the beauty pageant powerhouse of the world, they didn’t sponsor anything. Now, in the 2000’s and 2010’s, Venezuela has won 3 crowns in 7 years, and they haven’t sponsored anything either. As the matter of fact, some of the most successful countries in the past decade, Phillipines, Venezuela, Spain, Dominican Republic, Colombia and Mexico, haven’t been involved at all in sponsorship.

  4. MJ wanted to wear a different gown but the franchise holder of ms universe-Philippines the matronic Stella Marquez araneta imposed on MJ to wear the white gown designed by bazura, a designer from Colombia. Can you imagine the white gown and national costume of ms Philippines were designed by a columbian designer named Alfred barraza…a.k.a bazura (trash in englis).

      • Did you really understand what MJ said? Are you even aware that she is under contract with Stella Marquez Araneta which clearly forbids her from locking horns with the latter that’s why she had no choice but to play it safe? Or why else would she brokenheartedly comply with wearing a horribly tacky and outdated gown which would clearly dash her hopes of ever winning the Miss Universe crown even if she was staunchly offered by well-meaning supporters the choice of wearing a far superior one for the finals? Yes we have moved on and accepted her not bringing home the crown or a much deserved higher placemnet, but the circumstances pointing to an apparent conspiracy which caused her defeat shall not be tolerated and swept under the rug any longer.

          • From VERY reliable sources – trust me. Not sure if they would like their identities to be divulged at this point lest their planned course of action to address this issue be preempted. Some of them were even in Doral where they say the outrage among Filipino pageant fans is so palpable that you can slice it with a butter knife.

    • trashy gown and costume for TRASHY PINOY.. pinoy deserved it…clapper! the pageant is over, your rep became a glorified clapper, get a job…

      • Awww, still jealous and bitter much that your candidate didn’t even make the top 15, aren’t you? Get over it already and get a life. And while you’re at it, keep looking at the mirror so you’ll see better what you have been using to describe the noble Pinoys.

      • MJ made it into the Top 10 and is not considered a clapper. FYI, clappers are also know as “Thank You Ladies”, that is when the all the semifinalists have been called and the those who failed to make the cut start going to the backstage.

  5. Great article. Good analysis. Iwould’ve also included France in the top 10 as well as Mexico and Costa Rica. In the top 5 : I really liked Netherlands to be included, but regreted Sapin not to be in ( I also hated his tatto, that gave her a less refined image in the swiming suit presentation. She looked great in the evening gown.I wpoul’ve switched places between USA and Jamaica, USA 4th runner up and Jamaica 1st.
But Colombia was divine and very classy. All the rumors were crated by her detractors. She’s a lovelly and smart girl. She has a year to prove and she has started very well. Viva Paulina…

    • I wish I can agree with your conclusion that the rumors about the attitude of Miss Colombia are not true. But where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Among others, the post-pageant scenario onstage with more than half of the candidates choosing to congratulate and cheer for Miss Jamaica instead of the winner is just way too difficult to ignore and belittle.

      • There are also people who by a lelous attitude, light up the sparkles and start uo the ignition to provoke the fire. Time will tell us the truth…Honesty is not the plate of every situation where competition is present. On the other hand, watch the different inteviews Miss Universe is giving to juge her by her own attitude, not by what others say. It’s a matter of justice.

        • Jaime Paris, you sound so Colombian. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Don’t get me wrong. I was also rooting for paulina all throughout my stay in Doral.

But of course she would always put her best foot forward in front of the judges. How she is during her unguarded moments might just be something else though.

When was the last time you heard such nasty rumors about a frontrunner and eventual winner’s attitude anyway? None that I know of with Amelia, Zuleyka, Riyo, Dayana, Stefania, Ximena, Leila, Olivia and Gabriella.

At any rate, this is the first time I witnessed so many of the other candidates congratulating and even lifting up the fourth runner-up instead of the winner after the contest. It’s a scene which simply said so much.

          • Dear Wilma. I’m so sorry to tell you thta I’m French. I live near Paris. I would’ve liked Miss France to be among the top 5 too, it didn’ happend. I just think that in matters of justice is always fair to listen to both sides and not only take part on one. When I watch Paulina in all the interviews she’s giving, she seems to be well disposed and serene, out of any enemity. You know that selfishness is always source of whisper and ill commets, winners provoke reactions. In anycase Paulina has won, let wish her a good and succesful reign and the wisdom to proof that she is a smart and good person. Anybody has the rigth to his preferences, mine was for her because I find her beautiful and mature, despite thje bad rumors. I don’t offend other who could have a different oppinion than mine. Wellcome to France anytime. Come to France, you’ll see that Frenchpeople are nice, no matter how many comments are made to say that we are pretentious.

          • Enchanté, Jaime. I’ve already been to France twice. My sister lives in Strasbourg. Lovely lovely country. And yes not all the French are that snooty. Had several unpleasant encounters but not enough to ruin my experience the least bit.

Oh I never assumed that you’re Colombian. I only said that you sound the part.

Indeed I wish Paulina well during her reign. Like I said she was also my final choice to win despite the bad rumors. Good for her that my pre-arrival fave Migbelis was overweight during the finals.

          • Wilma, Thanks for your answer. I lived in USA for 5 1/2 years in NYC. I do have American friends that I love them very much. It would be time to go back. You sound very sincere and I do appreciate that quality. In fact, I also have great friends in Colombia that is a beautiful country with very nice scenery and people. It hurts me when I hear all the bad publicity that one can see on the media, when there are so many attractive and great things to discover there, specialy the warmth attitude of the people. That’s why I try to avoid or not to join stereotypes or general comments. As an american you can also understand that, as we french do. Good and bad people are everywhere, like wheat and bad herbs in the field of the Lord…
As Paulina said, there are situations where all countries and people of the world are responsable, not only one country, that’s the easy way to wash one’s hands and put the guilt on others…

      • Denigrate is always easy. Someone can destroy a beutiful stain glass or the master peace of an architect or artist by a bad intetion commentary. To creat and to build is always more difficult. Criticism made in a bitter way, is always the proof of a twisted or of poor spirit.

  6. It’s was nice to read the analyzing for the Miss Universe pageant, I agree and disagree with some points that is mention. But Miss Jamaica, Kaci Fennell, should have been ranked much high (first runner-up) and not the fourth runner-up. And so it is Miss Colombia takes it away!!!

  7. I thought the gown of Miss Philippines was not her personal choice but that of Stella Marquez Araneta, head of Binibining Pilipinas.

  8. till now my heart is still hurting coz miss philippines was not included in the top 5…she could have easily answer those questions because she’s smart!

  9. Miss Colombia was the most beautiful and prepare of the girls, congratulations to Colombian people, enjoyr your momento. Greetings from Mexico

    • I do agree with you completely. She’s also doing a great job after being crowned. She’s very open and funny in the inteviews, that contradicts all the rumors and false coments about her caracter.

  10. actually all the top 5 didnt answer the question correctly! and the question of miss colombia has been repeated way back miss universe 2008 when roberto cavalli ask question to miss venezuela! tsk..tsk.. nothings new to miss universe.. they say miss universe is for latin american.. unlike miss world all are equal and universal. no boundaries.. beauty with a purpose!

    • 1) roberto cavalli didn’t ask miss venezuela her final question in 2008. he asked miss mexico, “when is a woman truly satisfied”?

      2) it was louis licari who asked miss venezuela her question in 2008, “do you believe men or women have it easier in life”.

      3) rob dyrdek’s question to miss colombia last weekend, “what can women learn from men” is nothing like either of the above questions.

  11. I actually got 12 out of 15 semifinalists.. and 9 out of 10 finalists right.. But got only 2 out of my top 5 predictions.. Was disappointed not to see Philippines, Argentina and France in the Top 5. I was hoping them to join Colombia and Jamaica.. Anyway, the actual top 5 is probably one of the weakest in the history of MU.. Personally, Colombia was still the deserving winner & Jamaica should be the 1st runner up.. But still, I’m disappointed with both of them especially in the Q&A.I was expecting to be blown away with all the hype before the coronation night. if you ask me, all 5 of them gave really vague and weak answers. So if I we’re to be a judge on that night, I’ll just judge them on physical beauty and forget about the Q&A portion completely.. Results should be:
    MU-Colombia
    1ru-Jamaica
    2ru-Ukraine
    3ru-USA
    4ru-Netherlands

  12. Another thing, I actually liked the new format for the announcement of Top 15.. I think it gave the audience more suspense.. Well, at least for me. And I love they made Natalie Morales as host again.. I love her energy..She and Daisy Fuentes were my favorite hostesses of the pageant. I also liked the fact that they returned the live awarding ceremony of the special awards..But overall for me this year is an epic fail.. I hate the new crown..It looks hideous.. Doesn’t look like $300,000… The photoshoot of Fadil Berisha isn’t impressive as well.. And the production is just meh.. Small stage, cheap design and the low-cost guest performers.. Everything was obviously done and rushed which I completely understood having Doral, Miami as a last-minute option for a venue. And of course, the results that are rather disappointing.. A lot of pageant fans and worldwide audience waited a long time for this pageant to happen..But this is what we all got..

  13. i like the bubbly walk of miss india like it was in that outdoor swimsuit presentation…it was not cheap at all…but full of fun and energy, if she would have done something like that on the final night maybe she would have placed.

    • But he is definitely not. Or else he wouldn’t call the gown of Miss Philippines as “the most horrible gown of them all… what appears to be the cheapest gown of the night… the white gown looked like a piece of rag or perhaps a kitchen doormat…” knowing it was designed by Colombian designer Alfredo Barraza. Ric’s disdain for that hideous gown is understandably and patently Filipino.

  14. Colombia is far from being one of the leading countries in the beauty pageant ranking. Two crowns in fifty something years is a very poor rate! USA, VENEZUELA AND PUERTO RICO are the leading countries. Very bad article. It lacks objectivity and it is written in a very poor and unprofessional manner!

    • Colombia had many first runner ups and finalists for years , ( look it up ) and that makes it a beauty leading country and wait for whats coming

  15. No question about it that Miss Colombia is quite deserving of winning the title. But I just have to say that the horrid and tacky gown of Miss Philippines was NOT her choice but was rather very suspiciously imposed upon her by the Miss Universe pageant national director of the Philippines Stella Marquez Araneta who is a Colombian married to a Filipino tycoon. This cheap-looking knockoff of an original sublime creation by heralded young Filipino designer Leo Almodal was designed and executed by Colombian Alfredo Barraza who also designed the hands down stunning and obviously far superior height-enhancing gown of Miss Colombia. Do you smell the stench of sabotage and conflict of interest in the air? The gown of Miss Philippines was obviously meant not to accentuate her amazing hourglass figure and make her look shorter. Barraza also did the extremely mediocre and insulting national costume of Miss Philippines. All this travesty and outright mockery of the superior artistry and creativity of many Filipino designers of world class caliber is upon the exceedingly stubborn and highly questionable behest of Araneta who happens to be a bosom buddy of Barrazza – much to the widespread chagrin and objection of Filipinos for so many years already and yet they couldn’t do anything about it because Araneta owns the MUO franchise since 5 decades ago. If this is not an apparent connivance to sabotage the Miss Universe quest of Miss Philippines MJ Lastimosa who is acclaimed as the best Filipina representative this past decade, I don’t know what is.

    • Personally, I don’t find the gown tacky. It is way better than previous gowns that former Filipina queens wore at Miss Universe. Colombia’s gown was far better though. But MJ did well in the evening gown competition. There were just 5 ladies better, that is coming from the judges. And MJ Lastimosa, for fanatics may be the best Filipina, but for the others, she aint. I mean Venus, Shamcey and Janine are all still better for me. And to call her the best this past decade would be an injustice to Venus, Shamcey, Janine and Arilella who all went to and claimed runner-up honors.

      • The gown is so wrong on different levels. It may not be so tacky and outdated for a wedding, but most definitely it is just that for what is considered the most prestigious pageant of all. The beading of the top part may be exquisite, but as a whole particularly with the sheer middle part positioned just below the wearer’s nether parts and the bottom fishtail portion made of cheap iridescent tulle fabric made it pale miserably in comparison to the other 9 gowns which included a Zuhair Murad couture creation reportedly costing $100,000+ donned by Miss Ukraine. Plus the ill fitting greatly restricted MJ’s pasarela movements and inhibited her sashaying in true fighting form. And don’t get me started on how the sheer horizontal part and billowing bottom plus the heavy beading gave the impression that the wearer is much shorter and wider than MJ actually is. So deplorable despite the futile attempt after the preliminaries to modify the top part by making it cling further to her hourglass figure and showcase her cleavage more – a remedial measure which only made the gown stiffer to move in. The light and flowy gowns of Venus, Shamcey and Janine gave them the freedom to showcase their winning pasarela to the fullest (Shamcey’s Tsunami Walk has even reached an almost iconic status) while Ariella made the most out of an almost tacky design which fortunately had light beading and a resplendent color which made her stand out among the other top 10 onstage. Sadly we cannot say the same for a gown which was heartbreakingly imposed on a hapless MJ who arguably possessed the best features of the 4 Filipina queens before her – the determination, magnetic personality and enviable shapely waist of Venus, the catwalk skills and calculating intelligence of Shamcey coupled with her ample bosom, the fierceness and queenly demeanor of Janine on top of her quick wit under pressure, and the playfulness onstage plus smouldering stare of Ariella. Yes her facial features may have a somewhat divisive impression on people – either you love her or you loathe her – but the overall package is that of a gem who comes along rarely in the Philippine pageant scene. She deserved to be in the top 5 so much more compared to at least 2 of those who made it, but her opportunity and hopes was mercilessly dashed beyond her control by the powers that be whose loyalty is highly suspect.

  18. I don’t care who made it, what seasonal line it was from, how couture it was etc. but in no way, was that red “costume” of Ukraine more than $5,000. Definitely NOT $100,000. I design & have pageant & bridal gowns solid beaded & stoned in China & the only gowns more than $10,000 we’re Colombias & USA’s, in that order. Ukraine was one of my fave contestants & I picked her in my own top 5. But that was NOT A $100,000+ gown.
