Miss Universe 2003 Review
It's all about confidence. The moment when Amelia Vega stepped onstage, she was already oozing with conviction that she can win the crown. As the first ever Miss Universe from her small Caribbean country, she will undoubtedly be embossed into history books. Dominican Republic has never been this good. It's neither a beauty superpower nor a regular top ten finisher.

Some realizations took place in the pageant. That Miss Puerto Rico failed. That Miss India was the worst from her country in more than a decade. That Miss Russia can't follow the footsteps of her predecessor. And also some realizations ensued within the organization itself. Miss Universe realizes that it has to get a feel for the track of Miss World. Like, why not choose the top fifteen? (Actually it was more like Miss International since Miss World last year preferred top twenty.) Perhaps it's possible that they can select better from a pool of 15 women. They also realized that it wouldn't be boring if the top five beauties will not answer a common question. Instead, they will pick from their self-made questions including that of Miss Universe 2002 Justin Pasek. Miss World did that, right? It actually could have produced great answers. Like if Miss Japan had elaborated more on which of her senses she would give up last. (She chose hearing). Like if Miss Serbia and Montenegro dared to choose water. Saying "it gives life to this planet" rather than refusing to associate herself of being a woman, to inanimate objects. In the end, Dominican Republic's wise maneuver on what's the most precious gift she would give won the heart of the judges.

The pageant still lives up to its reputation. The glitz and the glamour are still there but still with mishaps, near misses and flaws. One flaw is using the quartet vixen, Bond, as the audio backdrop which makes me think on how much they paid them. Bond is more comfortable being on the spotlight not on the sidelines.

One near miss: Miss South Africa slipped onstage and two mishaps: Miss Venezuela was erroneously switched to Miss South Africa (though they look parallel at times) and a delegate who was out of synch with the swimsuit dance tune. The rest of the 15 finishers may be thinking the same as Amelia the moment the opening ceremonies began. All seems to be confident. You see, only two, Peru and Angola were visibly shocked when they were called. It seems most of the semi-finalists knew they are to enter the magic 15.

SUPERB!
Amelia Vega conquers the catwalk!

Miss Universe chose to discard a lot of its tradition this year. The segments were way different. They took the best 15, in no particular order (ah 'tis the tradition they can never discard). South Africa, Trinidad and Tobago, Greece, Venezuela, Panama, Czech Republic, Namibia, Canada, Brazil, Serbia and Montenegro, USA, Angola, Japan, Dominican Republic and Peru. Then, they sashayed in their gown. The five (Angola, Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago, Czech Republic and Canada) were eventually dropped while the rest competed for the swimsuits. Then, the judges decided that the best bodies belong to Venezuela, Japan, South Africa, Serbia and Montenegro, and Dominican Republic.

We do have disappointments and surprises. Mexico, Spain and Israel are the ones we missed. Surprises were Angola, Trinidad and Tobago, Czech Republic and Canada. Interestingly, both Namibia and Czech Republic were last year's Miss World non-finalists.

In over-all, we are truly entertained. This year's pageant put more emphasis on bodies and looks. The host country did a great job. Panama with all the casinos, high rise buildings and of course the great Canal were shown at the opening - another newness as it was pre-recorded outdoors rather than the usual indoors. At the canal, you noticed the guys onboard the ship going wild. As a seaman, I would have done worse. I could have "jumped off" the ship.

Ta ta. See ya next year.
